Madison Hogsten netted four straight goals midway through the game to pace Indian River High to a 9-0 victory over Polytech in girls’ soccer on Tuesday afternoon.

Hogsten, who also had two assists, scored the final three goals of the first half to give the Indians (11-1) a 5-0 halftime lead. She then added the first goal of the second half.

Samantha Whelen (3 assists), Skyler McClure and Margaret Ford also scored for IR, which finished with advantages of 13-2 in shots and 4-1 in corner kicks.

Polytech goalie Alyssa-Lynn Brown made three saves.

Smyrna 2, Milford 1: Casey Bell’s goal in the 71st minute broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the Eagles to their fourth win in the last six games.

Skylar Campanicki tied the score in the 64th minute for Smyrna, which also got six saves from Cassidy Cook. The Eagles outshot Milford, 14-7.

Melina Hudson tallied a first-half goal for the Buccaneers.

Caesar Rodney 9, Delmar 2: Jessie Prillaman collected four goals and an assist for the Riders, who led 8-1 at halftime.

Macy Ramsey added three goals and two assists for CR with Maci Aglio and Megan Rigsby adding the other goals. The Riders held advantages of 27-8 in shots and 5-2 in corner kicks.

Julia Johnson made 16 saves for the Wildcats with Ashlynn Hastings and Ashlyn Carr both scoring goals.

Cape Henlopen 8, Laurel 0: Brayden Fannin (2 assists), Brooke Hollingsworth (3 assists) and Lindsey Swontek (1 assist) all scored twice to pace the Vikings.

Monica Barrios-Soto made 18 saves for the Bulldogs, who were outshot, 26-5.

Softball

Sussex Central 10, Polytech 0: The Golden Knights scored four runs in both the first and third innings before running their winning streak to 12 games in a row.

Kasie Reed and Kasie Simpson had two hits apiece for Central.

Lake Forest 17, Woodbridge 0: Kaitlyn Stahre and Brooke Glanden both homered to lead the Spartans’ 17-hit attack.

Stahre also pitched a five-inning one-hitter to earn the victory.

Beverly VanBusKirk had the lone Raiders’ hit.

Indian River 7, Caesar Rodney 3: Trailing 1-0, the Indians scored five runs in the third to take the lead.

Makenzie Collins and Samantha Mumford both had multiple hits for IR, which finished with 10 hits.

Sophia Badell and Alexis Howerin had multiple hits for the Riders.

Delmar 6, Cape Henlopen 4: Haley Rogers hit a three-run homerun for the Wildcats, who built a 6-2 lead after two innings.

Avery Wheatley and Jordan Moore added two hits each for Delmar while Tracy Pleasanton pitched a five-hitter.

Cape’s Hannah Jones went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI.

Milford 23, Seaford 1: Darby Brennan went 5-for-5 with a pair of homeruns, a triple and eight RBI to pace the Buccaneers.

Rajene Bowe, Morgan Petty and C.J. Kohel each went 3-for-5 while Morgan Abbott pitched three perfect innings.

Shianne Johnson had a hit and scored the Blue Jays’ run.

Sussex Tech 9, Dover 2: The Ravens’ Brooke Ward pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts and also homered.

Shannon Lord hit a three-run homer with Madison Watson and Jenna Tate both adding two hits.

Kaila Quick had two hits with an RBI for the Senators.

Delmarva Christian 22, Dickinson 0: Seniors Bec Hastings, Allie Zitvogel and McKenzie Waide combined for five hits, seven RBI and 10 runs scored to lead the Royals.

Christiana 12, St. Thomas More 2: Ravens’ pitcher Kara Scarangella struck out five of the first eight batters she faced before leaving the game with an injury.

Milford 8, Sussex Tech 6: In a conference game played Monday, the Buccaneers overcame a 6-0 deficit to pull out the win.

Rajene Bowe had four of Milford’s 12 hits with three RBI. Macey Myers tripled while Darby Bernnan had a two-run double for the Bucs, who scored three runs in the seventh to cap their comeback.

Rylee Shockley’s grand slam sparked a five-run first inning for the Ravens with Shannon Lord (3-for-3) and Kayla Booros (2-for-4) both adding multiple hits.

Baseball

Caesar Rodney 7, Indian River 6: Reliever Noah DeAtley pitched the final four innings to earn the Henlopen Conference win for the Riders.

Matt Donovan had three of CR’s seven hits while Jackson Rall had two hits, an RBI and scored twice.

Delmar 4, Cape Henlopen 2: Jimmy Adkins allowed only four hits and struck out 11 in six-plus innings to earn the win for the Wildcats.

Delmar took the lead for good at 3-2 after scoring twice in the second.

Austin Elliott and David Erickson combined to pitch a three-hitter for the Vikings.

Sussex Central 6, Polytech 5: The Golden Knights picked up a walkoff win in the Henlopen matchup.

Milford 8, Seaford 5: The Buccaneers opened up an 8-4 lead with three runs in the sixth before holding off the Blue Jays.

Seaford scored one run in the bottom of the seventh before leaving the bases loaded.

Bryce Greenly had three hits with Abraham Mow and William Kimmel adding two each to Milford’s total of 12 hits.

Evan Nibblett had three hits while Justin Gray doubled for Seaford.

Glasgow 11, St. Thomas More 1: Benjamin Stant had an RBI for the Ravens while Matthew Torbert doubled and scored a run.

BOYS, Delmarva Christian 10, Dickinson 0: Hunter Smith netted three goals for the Royals with Sutton Bennett and Christopher Theis both scoring twice.

GIRLS, Delaware Military 12, Indian River 3: Helen Davis scored twice for the Indians with Mya Parks making six saves.

College baseball

Mears tops Wesley honorees: Three Wesley College baseball players were awarded All-Capital Athletic Conference honors.

Senior outfielder Trey Mears (Sussex Central) was named the CAC Co-Player of the Year as well as earning a spot on the All-CAC first team. Mears is only the second Wolverine to be named Player of the Year, joining Rob Benedict, who won the award in 2012.

It was the fourth time Mears has received postseason accolades from the conference after winning the CAC Rookie of the Year in 2013 and second-team All-CAC laurels in 2014 and 2016.

Mears led the CAC in batting average (.500), runs batted in (54), stolen bases (41), hits (68), runs scored (56), total bases (105) and on-base percentage (.568). He also hit seven home runs with 14 doubles. Mears reached base in all 34 games and registered a hit in 30 of Wesley’s 34 games.

Junior infielder Chris Seibert also landed a spot on the All-CAC first team after tallying 24 extra-base hits in 2017, tops in the CAC. Seibert also ranked second in the conference in batting average (.411) and RBI (53) while tying for second in in home runs (9).

Junior pitcher Alex Marrs earned All-CAC second-team honors. He tied with Salisbury’s Pete Grasso for the most wins in the CAC with eight.

College softball

Four Hornets make all-MEAC: Four Delaware State softball players were named all-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Catcher Desiree Moreno and third baseman Danielle Velez earned second-team honors, while second baseman Jasmine Melgoza and center fielder Mika Lumsden received third-team recognition.

Moreno leads the team in batting average (.309), home runs (5), doubles (12) and RBI (31). Velez is batting .290 with one home run, while ranking second on the Hornets with 21 RBI.

Delaware State will face North Carolina A&T in the opening round of the MEAC tournament on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in Ormond Beach, Fla. The winner will face Florida A&M or Coppin State Thursday evening.

Pair of Hens on all-CAA: Delaware sophomore catcher Anna Steinmetz was named to the All-Colonial Athletic Association first team while junior first baseman Mariah Kondravy was selected to the second team.
