In what is becoming a reoccurring theme for the Delaware State men’s basketball team, the Hornets played a competitive first half with SMU on Sunday only to let the game get away from them.

DelState trailed by only two points at intermission before falling to the Mustangs, 74-60. in a nonconference game at Moody Coliseum.

The Hornets (2-7) got 23 points from Devin Morgan before losing their second game in a row. Kavon Waller and Mrdjan Gasevic added 10 points apiece.

Delaware State trailed only 32-30 at halftime before being outscored 42-30 in the second half by SMU (6-3).

Ben Moore scored 16 points with 11 rebounds and Semi Ojeleye added 15 points for the Mustangs.

The Hornets led by one early in the second half. Ojeleye nailed a 3-pointer to put SMU up 43-41, and then Shake Milton hit from long distance to make it 46-42.

After a 10-point run a little later, SMU cruised the rest of the way. The Mustangs dominated the paint, outscoring DSU 34-18.

WOMEN, Georgetown 54, Delaware 46: The Blue Hens and Hoyas both struggled on the offensive end of the court, but, in the end, Georgetown pulled out the victory.

The Hens (5-3) registered season-highs in fouls (20) and turnovers (15) while shooting just 27.8 percent (15-of-54).

Sophomore Nicole Enabosi posted her second straight double-double of the year by recording 19 points and 12 rebounds to go along with three blocked shots, two assists and two steals. Senior Hannah Jardine added 12 points and six rebounds while classmate Erika Brown dished out a season-best six assists with four points.

Delaware never scored more than 14 points in a quarter in the game.

College track & field

DSU men second in meet: Delaware State’s men were second in the team standings with 143 points, just behind first-place UMES (162) at the UMES Lid-Lifter on Saturday.

DSU’s men topped all competitors in the 1,600-meter relay, 60-meter dash, 400-meter dash, one-mile run and pole vault.

The Delaware State women posted first-place finishes in the 60-meter dash and the pole vault en route to a third-place showing in the team standings.

DSU’s Kamau Floyd earned 10 points for the Hornets by winning the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.14 seconds. Julius Allen was third in the race at 7.21 seconds.

Allen gave DSU another 10 points after topping the field in the 400-meter dash with a winning time of 53.59 seconds. Floyd was second in the 400 at 54.10 seconds.

Delaware State’s Robert Castillo opened the season with a first place performance in the one-mile run with a time of 5:30.36. The Hornets’ 1,600-meter relay team of Laray Smith, Gerald Amobi, Cameron Burgess and Imontae Parker bested the competition with a time 3:23.53.

DSU’s Terry Trenson turned in a first-place performance in the pole vault, posting a top jump of 2.15 meters.

In the women’s competition, Delaware State’s Tramecia Sample took first place in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.84 seconds.

Delaware State freshman Chloe Franks began her collegiate career by winning the pole vault (3.20 meters).

College bowling

Hornets still winning: The reigning MEAC champion Delaware State women’s bowling team is opening up some distance in the 2016-17 conference Northern Division race.

The Hornets were victorious in all eight matches in the second MEAC North competition of the season, posting 4-0 marks in regular team play on Saturday and Sunday’s Baker matches. Delaware State leads the MEAC North with a 14-2 mark in division play.

Freshman Brianna MacLeod was the Hornets’ top individual performer with a total pinfall of 823 in four games for an average of 205.8. She had four 200-plus games, including a season-high 245 in the opening match against Coppin State.

Alexis Neuer was second on the Hornets with an 807 total pinfall for a four-game average of 201.8. Neuer rolled a career-best 258 in the UMES match, tying for the Hornets’ single-game high this season.

Amber MacLeod posted a 198.3 average in the four games, highlighted by a score of 215 in the Coppin State match.

Delaware State, ranked 12th in the latest National Tenpin Coaches Association top 25 poll, is now 29-10 overall.
