Tajanae Henry-Coney scored 20 points to help the Dover High girls’ basketball team defeat Smyrna High 70-48 in a Henlopen Conference Northern Division contest on Thursday night.

Brionna Hill added 18 points for the Senators. Smyrna was led by Melena Credle’s 20 points.

Caesar Rodney 77, Polytech 48: The Riders remained unbeaten with the road victory.

Alexis Reid and Kylie Kornegay-Lucas each netted 24 points for CR. Brionna Brooks chipped in 17 points.

Tamia Mathias was Polytech’s top scorer with 14 points.

Lake Forest 33, Red Lion 30: The Spartans outscored Red Lion 11-2 in the first quarter and held on for the nonconference victory.

Mya Maddox was the leading scorer for Lake Forest with 14 points.

St. Thomas More 47, Christiana 13: The Ravens stretched their winning streak to seven games behind DahNaija Barnes and Kaylah Barnes who scored 13 points apiece.

Milford 66, Seaford 27: Rajene Bowe paced the Buccaneers to a Henlopen South win with a game-high 21 points.

Boys’ basketball

St. Thomas More 65, Christiana 50: Eric Montanez led the Ravens with 24 points and Gregory Bloodsworth had 18 in the nonconference victory.

Lake Forest 83, Sussex Academy 24: Cam Lewis and Isaiah Morris each scored 24 points to lift the Spartans.

Cape Henlopen 69, Sussex Central 57: The Vikings earned the Henlopen North win thanks to Ian Robertson’s 15 points and Randy Rickards who added 14.

Smyrna 52, Dover 41: The Eagles rallied from a first quarter deficit to stay unbeaten against Henlopen North competition.

High school football

Blue-Gold rosters set: Smyrna High has four players and three coaches on the Gold squad for the annual Blue-Gold senior all-star high school football game.

Mike Judy will be the head coach along with Smyrna assistants Mike Marks and Dan Wagner. The Division I champions will also be represented by quarterback Nolan Henderson, offensive lineman Jerren Carter, linebacker Josh Hutchinson and defensive lineman Jamier Smith.

Woodbridge, the Division II state champions, have three players on the squad — Terrique Riddick, Leah Styles and Shymere Vessels. Sussex Central also has three players with Timothy Jones, Christian Moore and Myles Vernet.

Milford and Laurel has two players in the game with Greggery Clark and Brion Murray from Milford and Antonia Johnson and Perez Nichols from Laurel.

Najee Whitted (Caesar Rodney), Robert Mitchell (Cape Henlopen), Jimmy Atkins (Delmar), John Castro (Dover), Zion Howard (Indian River), Cam Lewis (Lake Forest), Hunter Poisson (Polytech), Stephon Short (Seaford) and Jordan Marvel (Sussex Tech) round out the downstaters on the Gold team.

The game is Saturday, June 17 at Delaware Stadium in Newark.

College volleyball

UD hires new coach: Sara Matthews, a rising star in the collegiate coaching ranks who has earned the reputation as one of the nation’s top recruiters, has been named the new University of Delaware volleyball head coach, UD Director of Athletics and Recreation Services Chrissi Rawak announced Thursday.

Matthews, a standout player at James Madison and Kansas, served the last two seasons as an assistant coach at TCU and has also previously served on the staffs at USC and West Virginia.

“We are excited to welcome Sara and her family to the University of Delaware and to the Blue Hens volleyball family,” said Rawak. “Sara has had outstanding success at every stop during her coaching career and is ready to take the next step as a head coach.  It became very clear early in our search that Sara was a great fit here at Delaware. She brings with her impeccable credentials as a top-notch recruiter, and coach – she is the quintessential student of the game. We are confident that she will lead our student-athletes and our volleyball program to great things on and off the court in the CAA and beyond.”

Matthews recently completed her second season at TCU, helping the Horned Frogs finish 15-13 and win seven matches in the powerful Big 12 Conference. TCU defeated Wichita State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the NCAA Second Round for just the second time in program history, before falling to overall top seed Nebraska.
