Delmar High knocked off Dover, 5-2, on Wednesday to force a three-way tie for the Henlopen Conference title in baseball.

Dover, Cape Henlopen and Sussex Tech all went 10-3 in conference, including a 1-1 record against each other. That leaves them in a tie for first place in both the conference and the Northern Division.

It was unclear on Wednesday how that tie would be broken.

Dover was leading Delmar 2-1 before the Wildcats rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Delmar outhit the Senators, 6-5.

St. Mark’s 9, Sussex Central 1: The Spartans scored six runs in the second inning to take control in the nonconference matchup.

Robert Marcelle had an RBI single in the seventh inning for Central’s run.

Seaford 11, Delmarva Christian 1: Dylan Kensinger pitched a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts as the Blue Jays earned a nonconference victory.

Derek Murphy homered for Seaford, which had 10 hits in the contest.

Girls’ soccer

Six Henlopen teams in tourneys: Caesar Rodney is seeded No. 2 in Division I while Indian River took the No. 3 seed in Division II as the DIAA girls’ soccer state tournament brackets were announced on Wednesday.

A total of six Henlopen Conference squads made the tourneys.

The 12-team Division II tournament starts on Saturday. In a doubleheader at Smyrna, sixth-seeded Lake Forest (12-3) will face No. 11 Conrad (7-6-2) at 5 p.m. before seventh-seeded Delmar (10-4-1) takes on No. 10 Ursuline (8-7) at 7 p.m.

In the quarterfinals, on either May 20 or 21, IR (13-2) will face the winner of the Lake Forest/Conrad game at a time and site TBA.

The eight-team Division I tournament starts with the quarterfinals on either May 20 or 21 at sites TBA. Second-seeded CR (13-1-1) will face No. 7 Newark (10-5) while No. 4 Smyrna (13-2) takes on fifth-seeded Sussex Tech (12-3).

Polytech 2, Dover 1: The Panthers scored a goal in each half to earn a Henlopen North win over the Senators.

Polytech won its last three games to finish the season 9-6.

Lake Forest 9, Seaford 1: The Spartans posted the Henlopen Conference Southern Division win to finish the regular season at 12-3.

That’s two more victories than the Spartans had a year ago.

Milford 5, Laurel 0: The Buccaneers picked up a Henlopen South victory.

Sussex Central 3, Delmarva Christian 2: The Golden Knights finished the season 5-10 after the nonconference win.

Softball

Caesar Rodney 9, Milford 0: Alyssa Ball pitched a complete-game five-hitter to earn the shutout as the Riders (12-5) won their fourth game in a row.

CR finished with 10 hits, taking a 5-0 lead after three innings.

Cape Henlopen 4, Sussex Central 2: The Vikings scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally for the victory.

Cape outhit the Golden Knights, 9-4. Central took an early 2-0 lead after scoring twice in the first inning.

Delmar 14, Dover 0: The Wildcats registered their fourth straight shutout to finish a perfect 13-0 in the Henlopen Conference.

Indian River 14, Red Lion Christian 12: The Indians won their fifth game in a row to improve to 9-8.

Delaware Military 22, St. Thomas More 0: Elise Conlin had the lone hit for the Ravens in their Diamond State Conference loss.

Lacrosse

Cape, Polytech top girls’ tourney field: Six-time defending champion Cape Henlopen earned the top seed while Polytech is No. 2 in the 10-team DIAA girls’ lacrosse state tournament field that was determined on Wednesday.

The field was expanded from eight to 10 teams this year. The top six squads earn a first-round bye.

Caesar Rodney (6-9) took the No. 10 seed and will play at seventh-seeded Wilmington Friends (10-5) on Saturday at 3 p.m.

In the quarterfinals, which will be played on May 19, Cape Henlopen (11-4) will host the winner of the first-round game between No. 8 Ursuline and No. 9 Middletown at 7 p.m. Polytech (13-1) will host the winner of the CR-Friends contest at 7 p.m.

The tourney continues with the semifinals on May 21 and the finals on May 26.

BOYS, Milford 7, Delmar 5: Matthew Viramontes netted three goals as the Buccaneers won the Henlopen Conference Southern Division title.

The contest was a special tie-breaker after the Buccaneers and Wildcats tied for the South crown. Milford will host North champion Cape Henlopen on Friday at 7 p.m. in the Henlopen title game.

Zachary Heesh (2 goals), Ring Lardner (1 goal, 2 assists) and Dallas Rhodes (1 goal, 1 assist) also led the Bucs, who got 14 saves from Clay Stevenson.

Polytech 9, St. Elizabeth 5: Jacob Davis and Jared Wagenhoffer each netted three goals and an assist as the Panthers finished the season with a victory.

Jeremy Armann (1 assist), Patrick O’Brien and Zachary Maheu (1 assist) also scored goals while Nathan Fairbanks made nine saves.

GIRLS, Sussex Tech 19, Padua 8: The Ravens rolled to the victory over the Pandas.

College baseball

Delaware State 13, Norfolk State 11: The Hornets overcame an early seven-run deficit and squandered a three-run lead before rallying in the ninth inning to defeat No. 1 seed Norfolk State in a wild MEAC Tournament contest at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The third-seeded Hornets are now one win away from reaching the tournament championship round for the second time in the last four years. DSU will face either Florida A&M or Savannah State in a third-round matchup on Thursday at 4 p.m.

A win on Thursday would give the Hornets a spot in Saturday’s championship round in the double-elimination tournament.

DSU knocked off defending conference champion Bethune-Cookman, 6-2, earlier in the day on Wednesday.

In the nightcap, Delaware State (16-27) trailed 11-10 entering the ninth inning, but scored three runs without a hit in the inning to take the lead. The Hornets tied the game at 11-11 when Chris Gonzalez was hit by a pitch with two outs and the bases loaded.

DSU then took the lead for good when Charles Dailey and Cameron Onderko scored on a Norfolk State error on a ground ball by Justin Allen.

Hornet reliever Hunter McVey (1-0) retired the Spartans in order in the bottom of the ninth to earn the win.

Delaware State scored three runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to highlight the improbable comeback from a seven-run first-inning hole.

Delaware State began its comeback when Allen singled with one out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jake Bartlett in the fourth inning to cut the Spartans’ lead to 7-1.

The Hornets got back into the game when Gonzalez hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning to pull to within 7-4. Gonzalez was 2-for-4 with four RBI to give him four hits and seven RBI in seven at-bats in the Hornets’ two tournament games.

DSU completed the seven-run comeback with three runs in the top of the seventh. Allen drove in a run on an infield single and Gonzalez scored the tying run on a Spartan throwing error.

Delaware State made it 10 unanswered runs after scoring three times in the eighth inning. Allen and Ron Farley had run-scoring singles and Onderko produced a run on a bases-loaded walk. Farley’s two-out hit scored Gonzalez to give the Hornets a 10-7 lead.

Allen was 3-for-6 with three RBI, while Farley and Dailey had two hits each for the Hornets.
