Sussex Central High edged Caesar Rodney High 4-1 in a Henlopen Conference softball matchup on Friday afternoon.

Hayley McCabe paced the Golden Knights by scattering six hits and striking out seven batters. Bella Grebe hit a first inning home run, scored twice and had two hits while Kailee Abbott added three hits for the Knights.

Alyssa Ball tripled and scored on an Alexis Howerin single in the fourth for the CR lone run.

Red Lion 15, Cape Henlopen 9: Red Lion scored six runs in the top of the ninth to win the extra-inning contest.

Cape Henlopen was led offensively by Jordan Virden who had a double and a pair of RBI.

Baseball

Polytech 12, Woodbridge 1: The Panthers used a six-run fourth inning sparked by a bases-clearing triple by Carter Chasanov.

Joey Haass and Dylan Gros combined to only allow three hits over six innings while striking out 10. Cole Garey hit a pair of doubles for Polytech.

Boys’ lacrosse

Tatnall 16, Smyrna 8: Jake Soroko had a hat-trick as the Eagles fell in the nocnonference contest.

College baseball

Delaware 11, Elon 2: Dover High product Nick Spadafino allowed no earned runs in five innings of work as the Hens earned a CAA road victory.

Doug Trimble led the UD offense with a 4-for-5 performance, a home run and three RBI. Jordan Glover and Calvin Scott each went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.

Nick Patten also had a home run for Delaware and drove in two runs. Cape Henlopen High grad Diaz Nardo added a double and a RBI.

Mary Washington 16, Wesley 11: The Wolverines were eliminated in the semifinals of the CAC Tournament on Friday afternoon.

Trey Mears hit a home run and drove in five runs in the losing effort. Cody Dmiterchik knocked in three runs for the Wesley offense.

Wesley led 11-7 before Mary Washington scored nine runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Women’s lacrosse

Towson 8, Delaware 5: A late second half run proved to be too little too late Friday evening as No. 20/17 Towson topped the Hens.

UD outscored the Tigers, 4-1, in the final 4:26, but Towson (10-5, 3-2 CAA) took the early lead and never looked back en route to victory.

Junior Becky Gohsler led the Hens (7-7, 2-2 CAA) with two goals, three draw controls and two ground balls.

Delaware also received goals from senior Jamie Schwartz, junior Megan Santoleri and sophomore Caroline Farley.

Central Michigan 23, Delaware State 6:  Delaware State senior Iman Hassan eclipsed the team record for career goals in the Hornet loss to Central Michigan in an Atlantic Sun game.

Hassan scored three goals in the contest to raise her career total to 49, tops in the five-year history of the DSU women’s lacrosse program. Hassan set the school record for career goals on her third score of the game with 5:23 remaining in the first period to pull the Hornets to within 11-4.

Delaware State freshman Jasmine West scored the first goal of her career with 9:18 to go in the opening period and added a second with 4:08 left before halftime.

Tai Galmore scored her sixth goal of the second late in the first period.

College golf

UD men in fifth at CAAs: The Hens carded a 290 score during Friday’s opening round of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship to end the day in fifth

place out of nine squads.

The College of Charleston leads the field with a 274 score, the lowest single round in league championship history, while Towson sits in second place at 281. UNCW is third with a 283 total, followed by Drexel at 287 and the Blue Hens. James Madison and Elon are tied for sixth place at 291, while William & Mary is eighth at 293 and Hofstra is ninth at 307.

Blue Hen junior Jack Gianniny fired a two under par 70 during his opening round on the par 72, 7,035-yard Monacan Front Nine and Buckingham Back Nine at Salisbury Country Club, ending the day tied for seventh place in the individual standings. Gianniny birded the first and fourth holes during a one under par front nine, before adding birdies on 11 and 13 while also finishing the back nine at one under.
