Kayla Wilson singled home Liv Faragher with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as Smyrna High edged Sussex Central, 4-3, in a Henlopen Northern Division softball showdown on Thursday afternoon.

The loss snapped a 12-game winning streak for the Golden Knights (7-3 in conference, 12-3 overall). The Eagles improved to 9-2, 12-3.

Trailing 3-1, the Knights tied the contest on Kaisey Reed’s two-run double in the top of the seventh.

Smyrna got solo homeruns from Kaelyn Press and Sara Miller. Jessica Anderson pitched a complete-game eight-hitter with nine strikeouts to earn the win.

St. Thomas More 9, Dickinson 8: The Ravens scored a run in the bottom of the eighth to top the Rams.

St. Thomas More scored three runs in the sixth to knot the score at 8-8.

Baseball

Sussex Central 1, Smyrna 0: Ethaniel Watkinson doubled home the game’s only run in the top of the seventh to lift the Golden Knights.

Trey Toppin pitched a three-hitter to earn the shutout for Central (8-7 overall), which won its fifth game in a row. It was also the Knights’ fourth shutout of the season.

Jeremy Carrow threw a four-hitter with eight strikeouts for the Eagles.

Girls’ soccer

Caesar Rodney 9, Cape Henlopen 0: Macy Ramsey netted four goals and an assist as the Riders picked up a North win.

Jessie Prillaman (2 assists) added two goals with Laynee Ford, Megan Rigsby (1 assist) and Rachel Ewald scoring the others.

CR finished with advantages of 18-4 in shots and 5-1 in corner kicks.

Lucy Siranides made eight saves for Cape.

Sussex Tech 5, Dover 1: Nicolette Phillips and Alex Singh scored a pair of first-half goals apiece as the Ravens earned the North victory.

Kiara Whealton also scored for Sussex Tech, which outshot the Senators, 18-1.

Mai Gibson scored for Dover, which got 16 saves from Brittney Rosello.

Newark 1, Smyrna 0: Cassidy Cook made six saves for the Eagles, who lost on a goal in OT.

Delmar 6, Woodbridge 0: Logan Walls tallied three first-half goals in the Wildcats’ South victory.

Ashlyn Carr, Bashia Korten and Lara Wood also scored goals for Delmar, which led 5-0 at halftime.

Alyssa Burhop made 14 saves for the Raiders.

Indian River 7, Sussex Academy 0: Madison Hogsten scored three goals as the Indians won their 11th game in a row.

IR’s also got goals from Samantha Whelen (2 assists), Skyler McClure and Kayley Belzner.

The Seahawks’ Kierstin Blatzheim made six saves.

Lacrosse

BOYS, Indian River 20, Lake Forest 2: George Martin collected seven goals and three assists, including the 300th point of his career, to pace the Indians to the South win on Wednesday.

Wyatt Kovatch (6 goals, 1 assist), Andrew White (3 goals, 4 assists) and Max Stong (3 goals) also scored multiple goals for IR. Samuel Nitz won 19 of 24 faceoffs.

GIRLS, Dover 14, St. Thomas More 2: Riley McQuaide netted four goals while Grace Gast (1 assist) scored three as the Senators (10-4) won their eighth game in a row.

Mira Prisco (1 assist) and Lizzie Ward added two goals apiece with Britney Miller making six saves. The Senators held a 28-12 edge in shots.

Gillian Crawford scored a goal in each half for the Ravens while Madison Murrian made seven saves.

Polytech 21, Sussex Academy 8: The Panthers won their fourth-game in a row to improve to 10-4.

Bella Kwan (4 goals, 2 assists) and Molly Martiner (3 goals, 1assist) paced the Seahawks while Grace Scott made six saves.

Cape Henlopen 12, St. Andrew’s 1: The Vikings improved to 13-2 with the nonconference win.

College basketball

Hens add 6-11 transfer: The Delaware men’s basketball program has added George Washington transfer Collin Goss to its roster.

The 6-foot-11 sophomore will have two seasons of eligibility remaining after sitting out next year.

Goss finished the year with 20 points and 14 rebounds, while averaging 6.2 minutes per contest for the Colonials. He attended St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School in Alexandria, Va., earning second-team All-Interstate Athletic Conference honors as a senior after averaging 9.8 points and posting three double-doubles.

“Collin’s size, skill set and overall basketball IQ make him a natural fit for our system and style of play,” said Blue Hen coach Martin Ingelsby. “More importantly, we are adding an individual with high character, a strong work ethic and someone who will represent our basketball program in a first-class manner on and off the court.”

College softball

Hornets split in MEAC tourney: After an excruciating extra-inning loss in its MEAC Tournament opener, Delaware State bounced back to win its second game in near 90-degree heat at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.

The Hornets dropped their tournament opener 3-0 in 10 innings to North Carolina A&T before bouncing back for a 7-5 victory over Coppin State later in the day.

In the opener, North Carolina A&T did not get its first hit until the 10th inning, but took advantage of the opportunity to score the only runs of the game.

Delaware State starter Hannah Shield allowed just one base runner (on an error) before the Aggies broke through in the 10th.

In the Coppin State game, Jasmine Melgoza and Sabrina Quarles were a combined 6-for-8 with four runs scored and two RBI to lead the Hornets’ 13-hit attack. Mika Lumsden was 3-for-3 with a run scored, while Desiree Moreno and Khaliyah Flournory drove in two runs each.

The Hornets will look to stay alive in an elimination game against Hampton or Bethune-Cookman today at 10 a.m.

Another award for CR grad: Former Caesar Rodney High softball standout Rosa’Lynn Burton was a first-team selection on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-East Region teams.

A freshman outfielder at Wilmington University, Burton leads the Wildcats and is second in the CACC with a .472 batting average while also leading the CACC with 84 hits, 52 runs scored, and 41 stolen bases. Her 41 stolen bases are already a single-season program record while she also broke the program’s single-season mark of 83 hits set by Brook Ash in 2013 with two hits in the CACC Tournament.

Burton reaches base at a .500 clip, while hitting 11 doubles, six triples, and a homer.

Wildcats drop NCAA opener: Wilmington brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh, but dropped its opener of the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament, 5-3, to top-seed and host Adelphi on Thursday afternoon.

The Wildcats play New Haven in an elimination game today at 1:30 p.m. The winner advances to play immediately afterwards.

College football

UD’s Oravitz gets new job: Jerry Oravitz, a staple of the Delaware athletics program over the last 21 years, will take on the new role of Associate Director of Athletics for Major Gifts later this month.

Oravitz, who joined the UD staff in 1997, will be responsible for major gift fundraising for the UD Intercollegiate Athletics Program with the major emphasis of the position being the solicitation of gifts from former student-athletes.
