Delaware State solidified its hold on second place in the MEAC North with a doubleheader sweep of Maryland-Eastern Shore in baseball on Sunday.

The Hornets won the opener 7-4 and completed the sweep with a 9-0 victory in game two.

DSU (10-8 MEAC North, 15-19 overall) swept the three-game series with the Hawks. They are 4½ games behind first-place Norfolk State, but hold a 3½-game lead over third-place Coppin State in the division standings.

In Sunday’s opener, Kwestin Smith was 3-for-5 with two runs batted in to lead the Hornets.

Trailing 1-0 in the fifth, Delaware State scored with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Smith doubled in the first run to tie the game before Jared Gillis (Smyrna) singled in the go-ahead run.

Freshman Garrett Lawson (4-4), the Dover High grad, was the winning pitcher.

In the nightcap, three pitchers combined on the shutout and Austin Bentley smacked a three-run homer to highlight the Hornets’ 11-hit attack.

Smith was 2-for-2 with two runs scored in the nightcap to go 5-for-7 in the twin bill and raise his season average to .286. Sean McGrath (3-3) pitched the first five innings to earn the game two win for the Hornets.

Lacrosse

WOMEN, Delaware 15, James Madison 12: Senior co-captain Coley Ricci posted a career-high six points on a career-best five goals and an assist as the Blue Hens knocked off the No. 14 Dukes.

Junior Becky Gohsler added her seventh hat trick of the season and tied a career-high with six points on four goals and two assists for Delaware (3-2 CAA, 8-7 overall). Fellow junior Megan Santoleri registered a career-game of her own with four goals and an assist for five points.

The Hens need to win next week at Drexel to clinch a berth into the CAA Tournament. Delaware led by as many as eight goals over JMU on Sunday.

Detroit Mercy 19, Delaware State 5: Detroit Mercy used a nine-goal run to break open a close game in an Atlantic Sun contest at Alumni Stadium.

The Hornets trailed only 6-3 after a goal by Brionna Watkins with 16:21 left in the first period, but the Titans answered with nine consecutive goals to take control.

Iman Hassan led Delaware State with two goals. She has 51 career goals, tops all time at DSU.

Tai Galmore (7) and Kayla Yurkanin (8) also posted goals for the Hornets.

College softball

Delaware State 3, Howard 1: Tara Tursellino recorded her 37th career complete game and Micaela Cummings drove in two runs to lead the Hornets in their final MEAC North contest of the season.

DSU completed a three-game series sweep of the Bison and won its fourth straight game to improve to 11-5 in the MEAC North, 16-24 overall.

Tursellino allowed five hits while striking out nine to raise her school-record win total to 47. She’s also the Hornets’ all-time leader with 377 strikeouts.

Charleston 8, Delaware 5: Charleston designated player Lexee Emanuel belted a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth inning and the Cougars went on to the CAA win.

Delaware dropped to 18-23 overall and 6-9 in league play.

Leanna Gearhart, Mariah Kondravy and Devon Steiner each finished with two hits for Delaware, while Mattie Nuccio drove home a pair.

College golf

Hens finish sixth in CAA: The Delaware men’s golf team finished in sixth place while Blue Hen senior Marc Oliveri placed seventh as UD concluded its season at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship.

Delaware fired its third consecutive sub-300 round during the completion of the tournament’s third round on Sunday morning with a 295, finishing sixth out of nine teams with an 874 three-round total. Charleston claimed the team title with an 841 score to secure a bid to the NCAA Regionals.

Oliveri carded a two-over par 74 during his final round, finishing in seventh place in the individual standings with a three-under par 71-68-74-213.
