Hiram Davis pitched five innings with four strikeouts and also went 2-for-3 at the plate as Dover High defeated Wilmington Charter 12-4 in a nonconference baseball contest on Saturday afternoon.

Andrew Carney doubled twice and drove in a pair of runs for the Senators. Davis was 2-3 with 2 doubles 2 RBI, Avery Tunnell went 2-for-2 with a RBI while Jarvis Worthy was 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Dover improved to 11-3 overall.

Delmar 10, Parkside, Md. 1: Hunter VonArx allowed one hit and struck out nine to win a game played on Friday night.

Christian Murphy’s three-run homer paced the Delmar offense.

Girls’ soccer

Indian River 3, Ursuline 0: Madison Hogsten netted a pair of goals as the Indians moved to 10-1 on the season.

Zena Lowman added an insurance goal in the second half while Samantha Whelen provided two assists.

Newark Charter 3, Delmar 2: Ashlyn Carr and Bashia Korten scored the goals, but the Wildcats narrowly fell in the nonconference matchup.

College track and field

Hillman wins award at conferences: Delaware women’s track and field team finished in fourth place while junior Sarah Hillman was named the meet’s Most Outstanding Field Performer as the Blue Hens hosted the CAA conference meet this weekend at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.

Hillman, a Polytech High product, won the discus title with a throw of 56.76m, which ranks seventh nationally and shatters her previous school record.

Leslie Ope placed second in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.40 for the Blue Hens, while Jeanette Bendolph (Caesar Rodney) also was second in the 800m finals by finishing in 2:10.63.

Delaware finished fourth out of eight conference squads with 108.5 total points. Towson claimed the CAA women’s title with 163.5 points, followed by Elon (158), James Madison (140) and the Blue Hens.

College softball

Delaware sweeps UNCW: Delaware celebrated its Senior Day by sweeping a doubleheader from UNCW, 4-3 and 2-1, in a pair of dramatic victories Saturday afternoon at the UD Softball Stadium to keep its postseason hopes alive.

The Blue Hens improved to 23-27 overall and 9-11 in the Colonial Athletic Association, and are now tied for fifth place in the league standings with Elon, which fell to James Madison on Saturday. If Delaware defeats the Seahawks on Sunday at 12 noon in its regular season finale, the Blue Hens will qualify for the five-team CAA Tournament at JMU next Wednesday through Friday. If the Blue Hens lose to UNCW, Elon will earn the fifth seed in the tournament.

Miranda McDonald scored the winning run in the first game on a wild pitch. Taylor Curran held the Seahawks to just one run in the nightcap.
