Roundup: Dover scores 7 in first inning, defeats Woodbridge 11-3

Dover High scored seven runs in the first winning on its way to an 11-3 baseball win at home against Woodbridge High on Wednesday afternoon.

Dominic Velazquez pitched five innings with seven strikeouts for the victory. Joseph Wunsch and Cam Turner each had a pair of hits for Dover.

Turner, Wunsch, Trey Howard, Jared Hickox, Mike Carrington and Hiram Davis each contribute RBI for the Senators. Doug Avery was 2-for-4 to lead the Blue Raiders.

St. Georges 12, Milford 3: Abraham Mow hit a home run and a double for Milford in the nonconference defeat.

BOYS, Caesar Rodney 16, Worcester Prep (Md.) 7: Joshua Cosden scored five goals and added an assist, Demetrius Stevenson had four goals and five assists, and Jacob Copio had three goals to lead the Riders (7-1).

Tyler Gross recorded 11 saves for CR.

College softball

Delaware State 10, UMES 0: Freshman catcher Desiree Moreno had two hits, including a grand slam, and five runs batted in to lead Delaware State to a 10-0 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore in a make-up contest.

Tara Tursellino (3-9) was the winning pitcher, allowing three hits and striking out five without a walk in the complete performance.

Dani Velez added two hits and three RBI for DSU, who improved to 13-24 overall and 10-5 in the MEAC.

Moreno is tops on the Hornets in home runs (5) and RBI (27) and is second on the team with a .302 batting average.

The Hornets outhit the Hawks 12-3. Sabrina Quarles had three hits (3-for-4), while Jasmine Melgoza joined Moreno and Velez with two hits each.

College track and field

Wesley’s Brown honored: Freshman track & field athlete Jasmine Brown earned her second Corvias Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) South Rookie of the Week award in her career, as announced by the ECAC on Wednesday.

Brown picked up three top-10 finishes at the Johns Hopkins Invitational with athletes from all three divisions. Brown won the high jump with a leap of 1.60 meters (5 feet, 3 inches). Brown also recorded a third-place time in the 100-meter hurdles (15.15 seconds) and a sixth-place mark in the triple jump (10.95 meters, 35 feet, 11.25 inches).

Brown has the fourth-best mark in the triple jump, fifth-fastest time in the 100 meter hurdles and fifth-highest leap in the high jump in the Mideast Region.

College equestrian

Hornets recognized for academics: Ten members of the 2016-17 Delaware State equestrian team have earned national recognition for their academic success. The National Collegiate Equestrian Association has announced that DSU’s Hayley Anderson, Abigail Buckwalter, Emily Fick and Elizabeth Koons are among 47 student-athletes nationwide selected to the American Quarter Horse NCEA  Academic First Team. The team consists of riders who have competed in a minimum of 70 percent of their school’s meets; and earned a cumulative grade-point-average of at least  3.5 while maintaining full-time enrollment in the previous spring and fall semesters, respectively.

DSU’s Emily Nelson and Vanessa Rabito earned selection to the American Quarter Horse NCEA Academic  Second Team, which honors riders who have competed in a minimum of 60 percent of their school’s competitions while maintaining a GPA of at least 3.25.

Delaware State’s Rachel Dantley and Angelina Watts were named to the American Quarter Horse NCEA Academic Honorable Mention Academic Team for competing in a minimum of 50 percent of their team’s matches and maintaining a GPA of at least 3.0

Also, 10 Hornets were named to the American Paint Horse Association NCEA Honor Roll. Buckwalter, Dantley, Fick, Anderson, Koons, Nelson, Rabito and Watts are joined by teammates Monica Ellis and Dominique Pierre for maintaining a GPA of at least 3.25 and full-time enrollment in the previous spring and fall semesters, respectively.
