After five innings on Friday afternoon, Dover High still hadn’t found a way to score on Delmar.

But the Senators came up with a pair of runs in both the sixth and seventh, downed the Wildcats 4-2 and captured the Henlopen Conference baseball title because of it.

Dover finishes its league schedule with a record of 10-3 (13-4 overall), one game ahead of Cape Henlopen and Smyrna in the Northern Division. Milford also went 10-3 in conference but the Senators beat the Buccaneers, 11-7, on May 2.

It’s Dover’s first conference title since 2014.

“It’s very gratifying because we’ve been through so much with the injuries,” said coach Dave Gordon, who’s lost three starters to injuries. “It was a great win.”

Trailing 1-0 in the sixth, the Senators loaded the bases by sandwiching two walks around a Cameron Turner double. One run scored on a passed ball with another coming in on a walk.

The Wildcats had runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the sixth when Dover left fielder Hiram Davis made a great catch, running back and diving toward the fence to snare the line drive.

In the seventh, Noah Lanouette doubled home one run before Andrew Carney (2-for-3) singled in another.

Delmar (8-5 in conference, 13-5) answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh before falling short. Five pitchers combined on a four-hitter for the Wildcats.

Turner (3-1) pitched a complete-game three-hitter with four strikeouts and four walks. He threw 105 pitches.

“Cameron Turner grew up in front of you today,” said Gordon. “He definitely went the max for us.”

Milford 9, Polytech 8: The Buccaneers overcame an early 5-0 deficit, taking the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

William Kimmel, Ethan Hurd, and Jimmy Kucharzyk had multiple hits for Milford with Chad Reichold adding two RBI. Bryce Greenly, Milford’s fourth pitcher in the game, took the win.

For the Panthers, Miguel Rivera had three hits and scored three runs while Carter Chasanov and Joey Haas (2 RBI) had two hits apiece. Cole Garey drove in two runs.

William Penn 5, Caesar Rodney 1: Kyle Maier had two of the Riders’ four hits in the loss.

Seaford 15, St. Thomas More 3: The Blue Jays evened their record at 8-8 with the victory.

Softball

Lake Forest 10, Seaford 0: Kerrigan Simpson pitched a five-inning one-hitter with 11 strikeouts as the Spartans clinched the Henlopen Conference championship on Friday.

Lake Forest (16-2 overall) has won 12 games in a row to finish the regular season 12-1 in conference.

Simpson also went 3-for-3 while Brooke Glanden and Kayla Thompson both homered for the Spartans, who had 13 hits in the contest.

Kelsey Welch had the Blue Jays’ lone hit.

Delmar 10, Dover 0: Winning pitcher Tracy Pleasanton threw a four-hitter to earn the shutout for the Wildcats.

Pleasanton also went 2-for-2 with a double while Jordan Moore and Paige Lynch both drove in a pair of runs.

Four different players had hits for the Senators.

College baseball

Delaware 6, Charleston 1: Senior Jordan Glover went 3-for-4 with a home run and a double, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs, to pace the Blue Hens to the CAA victory.

For the fourth consecutive game, the Hens received stellar pitching, as Dover High grad Nick Spadafino (5 IP, 1 ER) and closer Burk FitzPatrick (4 IP, 2H, 6K) combined to limit the potent Charleston offense to just one run. The pitching performance lowered Delaware’s team ERA to 4.32 for the season.

The Hens (30-20, 15-8 CAA) and Cougars (25-29, 12-11 CAA) endured a nearly three-hour lightning delay, before concluding the contest.

Delaware goes in today’s 1 p.m. regular-season finale battling for the top seed in the CAA tournament with Northeastern and UNC-Wilmington

“We have worked extremely hard this season, and now it comes down to one last game,” coach Jim Sherman said. “If we play well enough tomorrow and get a win, it’s possible we may get some help from some other teams. Hopefully we take care of our business, and get some help tomorrow.”

North Carolina A&T 7, Delaware State 4: The Hornets couldn’t take advantage of a solid effort by fill-in starting pitcher Darnel Maisonet as they were eliminated from the MEAC Tournament on Friday.

DSU was 2-2 in the double-elimination tournament to post a 22-25 overall record this season.

The Hornets led 4-3 before NCA&T scored two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings.

Normally an outfielder, Maisonet was making just his fourth start and fifth appearance on the mound this season. He pitched into the seventh, allowing five hits and five runs, two unearned, and six strikeouts in 6.1 innings.

Freshman Tyler Collins had a big three-run double to give DSU the lead. Jaylen Zielecki was 3-for-5 with a double, while Evan Regez and Austin Bentley had two hits each for Delaware State.
