A day after being sidelined by illness, District I wasn’t feeling much better when it fell behind Latin America by four runs on Monday night.

But the Kent County all-stars recovered quickly, rallying for a 7-5 victory over Latin America in the Big League softball World Series at Lower Sussex.

The defending Series champions scored five runs in the fifth inning to overcome a 5-1 deficit. District I is now 1-0 in pool play.

Kent County’s opening game with Sussex County was postponed on Sunday after most of the team was sick.

East champion District I sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth, collecting five hits and two walks in the outburst. Kasey Fry had a two-run double while Kerrigan Simpson and Harley Rickards also had RBI singles in the inning.

Kent County added an insurance run in the sixth when Whitney DeMora homered to centerfield.

District I’s nine-hit attack was led by Fry (2-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI), DeMora (2 runs, 1 RBI), Shaina Reed (2-for-4, 1 run) and Rickards (2-for-4, 2 RBI).

Reed was also the winning pitcher, scattering nine hits with eight strikeouts and three walks. The Polytech High grad shut out Latin America over the last four innings.

Kent County, which is now 7-0 in all-star action, plays again today when it faces Europe-Africa champion Italy at 3 p.m. in Roxana.

Senior League

District-III 3, Southwest 2: Rylee Shockley tripled and Samantha Mumford brought her home on a bunt in the bottom of the sixth inning as Sussex County edged Southwest in the Senior League World Series on Monday night.

District III overcame an early 2-0 deficit as it evened its record at 1-1.

Pitcher Mika Walker shut out the Southwest (0-2), from Louisiana, after allowing a pair of first-inning runs. She threw a five-hitter with four strikeouts and two walks.

Southwest stranded 11 runners on base.

Sussex County scored twice in the bottom of the first when Brooke Stoeckel doubled home Brooke Ward and then stole home. Six different players had hits for District III in the contest.

Sussex County returns to action today at Lower Sussex when it faces Latin America at 10 a.m.

College football

DelState game on ESPN: Delaware State’s Nov. 14 football contest at North Carolina A&T will have a national audience.

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game at Aggie Stadium in Greensboro, N.C., will be televised live on ESPN3, and rebroadcast on ESPNU later in the day. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. The ESPN rebroadcast is set for 4 p.m.

The broadcast is part of the MEAC’s eight-game ESPN television package.

The MEAC will participate in the Inaugural Celebration Bowl this year pitting the champion of the conference against the champion of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) in a post-season bowl game on Dec. 19 in Atlanta, Georgia. The matchup will be televised live at noon on ABC.

This will be Delaware State’s first MEAC television Game of the Week appearance since a 28-23 victory at Morgan State in 2012.

The 2015 MEAC/ESPN schedule will kick off with the South Carolina State vs. Arkansas Pine-Bluff MEAC/SWAC Challenge contest in Orlando, Fla., on Sep. 6.

Delaware State players return to campus for preseason camp this week. The Hornets will open the season on Sep. 5 at Liberty University. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Hornets will play their home opener on against Chowan on Sep. 19. Kickoff is 2 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.

Basketball

87ers to make stop in Dover: The Delaware 87ers will hold their third annual 87ers Day on Friday with activities in both throughout New Castle and Kent Counties.

Tipping off before noon, Sevens’ mascot Caesar and 87ers staff will be visiting camps in Dover, Newark and Wilmington.

Events will culminate with a two-hour fan fest at Elbert Playground (621 Townsend Street) in Wilmington, from 4–6 p.m., featuring a free basketball skills clinic. Additionally, there will be moon bounces, face painting, live music and balloon animals, among other activities — all free to those in attendance.
