Third-seeded Delmar High scored three second-half goals to pull away to a 4-1 win over No. 14 Conrad in the first round of the DIAA field hockey state tournament on Tuesday afternoon.

The Henlopen Conference Southern Division champion Wildcats (13-1-1) will host the winner of the Padua/Wilmington Friends game in Saturday’s quarterfinals at a time TBA.

Delmar trailed 1-0 before Ashley Arter tied it with 13:52 left in the first half. Peyton Kemp then scored twice while Arter added another goal in the second half as the Wildcats took control.

Paige Twilley-Webster and Caitlyn Wink had two assists apiece while goalie Aubrie Jones made five saves. Delmar finished with advantages of 13-3 in shots and 25-5 in corners.

Wilmington Christian 3, Milford 2: The second-seeded Warriors tied the game with 10 minutes left in regulation before downing the No. 15 Buccaneers in overtime.

Wilmington Christian (15-1) will host Dover at 11 a.m. in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Daphne Leighty and Rajene Bowe netted goals for the Buccaneers. Darby Brennan provided an assist.

Milford finishes the season with a record of 9-6-1.

College basketball

Wesley women picked sixth: The Wesley College women’s basketball was selected to finish sixth in the Capital Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll.

Wesley finished last season with an 11-14 overall record and a 7-11 mark in conference play. Despite tying with two other teams for sixth in the standings, the Wolverines lost out on tiebreaker and didn’t qualify for the CAC tournament.

The Wolverines return all five of their starters including leading scorer and CAC All-Conference first-teamer Brionna Johnson (16.8 ppg). Returning for her sophomore season after a stellar freshman campaign is Alexus Stroud (12.3 ppg) while Tiyanna Gibbs, Brittney Kerns, and Tiara White will likely round out the starting lineup.

College field hockey

Hens ranked No. 12 in final poll: After clinching its third straight CAA Championship, Delaware enters NCAA Tournament play ranked No. 12 in the final Penn Monto/NFHCA Coaches Poll of the season.

The Blue Hens (16-5) earned the CAA’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament after defeating James Madison, 2-1, in an overtime thriller in the league’s title game Sunday.

Delaware received 329 points to move up three spots to No. 12, a slot where the Blue Hens previously resided for the week of September 22.

There was also movement in the top five as North Carolina (18-2) took over the No. 1 ranking with 786 points and nine first place votes while Syracuse (17-1) slipped to No. 2 with 780 votes and 21 first place votes. Connecticut (20-0) is now in third while Virginia (14-5) moved up to fourth and Maryland (19-3) is in fifth.

The Hens have been ranked in the NFHCA Top 20 in each week since September 8. Delaware is ranked No. 14 in this week’s NCAA Field Hockey RPI.

UD is currently fourth nationally with 3.85 goals per game and eighth with a scoring margin of 1.83. The Hens are also fourth in points per game (10.81), fifth in assists per game (3.0) and ninth with 10.0 defensive saves.

Delaware next travels to Charlottesville, Va. to face third-seeded Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

The winner of Saturday’s first game will take on the victor of the 2 p.m. contest between Duke (12-6) and Stanford (13-6). Sunday’s second round game is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
