Charleston Southern right fielder Cole German led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a home run to give the Buccaneers a 3-2 win over Delaware State in baseball on Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets (1-1) led 2-0 before Charleston Southern scored two runs in the eighth to tie the game.

The loss overshadowed a strong performance by DSU starter Sean McGrath, who allowed two runs — one earned — and struck out four while walking two in 7.1 innings.

Reliever Darrien Ragins struck out the only two batters he faced in the eighth inning to get the Hornets out of a jam, but surrendered German’s homer in the ninth to suffer the loss.

With the bases loaded, Jared Gillis reached on a throwing error, allowing two runners to score.

Charleston Southern was aided by two Delaware State errors and a wild pitch in its two-run eighth inning to tie the game.

Darnell Maisonet was 2-for-2 at the plate and Kwestin Smith also had two hits for the Hornets. Maisonet is 4-for-6 (.667) and Austin Bentley has four hits in nine at-bats (.444) in DSU’s first two game.

Freshman left hander Garrett Lawson, a Dover High product, is scheduled to make his debut as today’s starter for the Hornets.

College basketball

MEN, Mary Washington 98, Wesley 79: Evan Anderson scored 25 points and J.W. Lawson added 23 but the Wolverines dropped their regular-season finale on Saturday.

Wesley (8-10 CAC, 10-15 overall) finishes sixth in the Capital Athletic Conference and will play at third-seeded York on Tuesday evening in the CAC tournament quarterfinals.

The Wolverines, who also got 12 points from Paul Clemmons, never led in Saturday’s game against the Eagles (7-11, 12-13).

WOMEN, Mary Washington 66, Wesley 41: Tiyanna Gibbs with 11 points was the only Wolverine to score in double figures for the Wolverines (3-15 CAC, 7-18 overall).

The Eagles (13-1, 22-2) outscored the Wolverines 22-7 in the fourth quarter to close out the victory.

College lacrosse

MEN, Navy 11, Delaware 5: The Blue Hens closed to within to three goals entering the final period, but No. 17-ranked Navy scored four times to pull away again.

Delaware (1-2) scored the final two goals of the third period to pull to within 7-4 but could never get closer as the Mids (1-2) scored twice in the first five minutes of the final stanza to take control.

Delaware freshman Charlie Kitchen scored twice and dished out an assist to lead the Hens’ offense. Joe Eisele, Will Hirschmann, and Matt Olbrich also scored goals for the Hens.

Shenandoah 19, Wesley 7: Shenandoah netted the first seven goals before downing the Wolverines in their season opener.

Zach Weitzel scored twice for Wesley with Josh Wassum adding a goal and three assists. Goalie James Cella made six saves.

WOMEN, Wesley 13, Hood 12: The Wolverines scored the final three goals of the contest to rally for the season-opening victory.

Fallon Fore scored twice before Naomi Pitts tallied the game winner with 1:25 remaining.

Paige Brehm had three goals and an assist for Wesley with Fore, Brianna Bacon and Kaitlin Brennan also scoring two goals each. Goalie Shelby Schirmer made 12 saves.

Penn 9, Delaware 7: Junior Becky Gohsler continued her hot start to the year by tallying four goals, but it wasn’t enough as the Blue Hens fell to the No. 11 Quakers.

Gohsler, who posted a career-high six goals last weekend, added a draw control and caused turnover for the Hens (1-1).

Freshmen Christine Long and Sydney Rausa connected twice on the day as Long registered the first two goals of her career and Rausa was credited with the assists.

Senior co-captain Coley Ricci led the defensive unit with five draw controls, three caused turnovers and three ground balls.

Boys’ basketball

Salesianum 62, Sussex Tech 49: The Sals had three players score in double figures in handing the Ravens the nonconference loss.

Ja’Ron Hunt-Fletcher (14 points) and Pa’Trek Dennis (10) led Sussex Tech, which finishes the season with a record of 5-14.

Girls’ basketball

Smyrna 52, Dover 46: The Eagles rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to post the victory in their Henlopen North finale on Friday.

Melena Credle netted 23 points with Jayla Smith adding 12 for Smyrna.

The Senators, who finished the season 9-11, got 12 points from Tajanae Henry-Coney.
