Caesar Rodney High took control of the match by winning six straight individual bouts before posting a 41-21 victory over Salesianum in nonconference wrestling on Saturday afternoon.

The win was the third in the last four matches for the Riders, who evened their record at 3-3.

A 51-second fall by Mikel Abdullah (160 pounds) was CR’s quickest pin of the afternoon. The Riders also got pins from Cameron Hayes (120) and Riley Tracy (145).

CR won nine of the 14 individual matches.

Central, Dover top Canal: Sussex Central took first place while Dover finished second in the team standings as the Canal Classic tournament concluded at Middletown on Saturday.

The Senators’ Anthony Fisher was named the tourney’s Outstanding Wrestler after winning the individual title at 138 pounds. Dover’s Nick Lee also won the title at 145.

Caravel 46 Lake Forest 30: In a match that included seven forfeits, the Buccaneers notched the nonconference victory.

Boys’ basketball

Caesar Rodney 70, Seaford 47: The Riders (9-3) stretched their winning streak to six games in a row with the victory on Saturday.

Jaquan Hooks had 16 points with four assists for CR with Kairi Buie adding 14 points and 12 rebounds.

College basketball

MEN, Wesley 81, Southern Virginia 68: Four players scored in double figures as the Wolverines (5-5 CAC, 7-10 overall) snapped a three-game losing streak with the Capital Athletic Conference win.

Brian Cameron, Evan Anderson and Rasahn Brinkley all netted 14 points with J.W. Lawson adding 13 points and five assists.

Southern Virginia led by as many as eight points at 24-16 early in the contest. But Wesley rallied to go up 35-30 at halftime before stretching its lead to as many as 20 points in the second half.

WOMEN, Wesley 83, Southern Virginia 74: Four Wolverines scored in double digits as the Wolverines picked up a Capital Athletic Conference win.

Senior forward Brionna Johnson (Smyrna) led the Wolverines with her fourth double-double of the season as she tallied a team-high 18 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Junior guard Alexus Stroud (Smyrna) collected 17 points, going 9-of-12 from the foul line, with five rebounds and four assists.

Lindsey Better and Stacey O’Neale added 11 points apiece for Wesley (3-7 CAC, 7-10 overall).

College indoor track & field

Reid, Hillman among UD winners: Delaware won five events, including three sprint titles, on the way to a third-place team finish at the Gulden Indoor Track & Field Invitational at Bucknell.

Delaware first-year performer and Tennessee transfer London Freeland was a triple winner as she took home first place in both the 200 meters (25.80) and 400 meters (58.14) and teamed with Tyra Reid (Caesar Rodney), Carolyn Darr, and Haley Berkeley to capture the 4 x 400 meter relay in a time of 3:53.93.

Also bringing home a first-place title for the Blue Hens was Sarah Hillman (Poltech), who won the shot put (47-0.75) for her sixth career indoor meet title. She also placed sixth in the weight throw with a toss of 51-5.75.

Youth wrestling

Polytech hosting novice event: Polytech High will host its annual Novice Wrestling Championships on Feb. 12.

This is a tournament for novice wrestlers trying to gain confidence in the sport and is open to wrestlers ages 4-13. Walk-ins are welcome and applications can be requested by contacting Eric Buckson at eric.buckson@polytech.k12.de.us or going on line to Polytech High School.com.

Baseball

Riders hosting camp: The Caesar Rodney baseball program is sponsoring a spring baseball camp from 1-3 p.m. on Sundays, Jan. 29-Feb. 19, at the high school gym.

The camp is open to youth in grades first to sixth. The camp will instruct campers in fundamentals of hitting, throwing and catching, as well as position play and pitching techniques. The instructors will be members of the CR coaching staff and current/former CR players.
