Caesar Rodney High scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning to put away a 10-1 victory over Polytech in Henlopen Conference softball on Wednesday afternoon.

The Riders finish the regular season 6-7 in conference, 9-9 overall after winning their second game in a row.

Sophie Badell had three hits with Alexxys Harris adding two of CR’s 10 hits in the contest. Alyssa Ball pitched a six-hitter to earn the win.

Brianna Stevenson had three hits for the Panthers.

Milford 9, Delmar 8: The Buccaneers scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to complete their comeback from an early 5-0 deficit.

Megan Fry had a two-run homerun in the sixth while Rajene Bowe went 3-for-4.

Shelby Taylor hit a pair of doubles for the Wildcats.

Smyrna 10, Middletown 2: Trailing 1-0, the Eagles scored five runs in the fifth and four more in the seventh in winning their sixth game in a row.

Kaelyn Press went 4-for-5 and doubled twice for Smyrna, which finishes the regular season 15-3. Lexi Moore and Olivia Faragher also had multiple hits.

Sussex Tech 19, Seaford 0: Shannon Lord had three hits and five RBI to spark the Ravens.

Madison Watson (3 runs) and Rylee Shockley both homered twice while Jakayla Sample hit one.

Tori Grimes and Kelsey Welch both had a hit for the Blue Jays.

Indian River 7, Caravel 0: The Indians blanked the Buccaneers in a nonconference matchup.

Girls’ soccer

Six Henlopen teams in tourneys: Three Henlopen Conference teams made the fields for each of the two DIAA girls’ soccer state tournaments that were determined on Wednesday.

Northern Division champion Caesar Rodney and South champion Indian River were both awarded the No. 3 seed in their respective tourneys.

In the 10-team Division II bracket, which begins on Saturday, Milford will host a doubleheader. No. 10 Lake Forest (7-7) faces No. 7 Delaware Military (9-5-1) at 11 a.m. before No. 5 Delmar (10-4) takes on No. 12 St. Elizabeth (8-7) at 1 p.m.

In the Division II quarterfinals, which will be held on either May 24 or 25, IR (14-1) will play the winner of the first-round matchup between No. 3 Tower Hill and No. 11 Wilmington Friends.

The Division I quarterfinals will be played on either May 24 or 25. CR (11-3) faces No. 6 Concord (10-3-1), No. 7 Sussex Tech (9-5-1) plays No. 2 Padua (12-2-1) and No. 8 Polytech (10-5) squares off with top-seeded Middletown (14-1).

Padua has won five straight Division I state titles while Caravel has won three in a row in Division II.

Lake Forest 5, Sussex Central 1: The Spartans downed the Golden Knights to close the regular season.

Sussex Tech 2, Conrad 0: Gloria Gomez and Aliyah Browning tallied second-half goals to lift the Ravens.

Valencia Whealton made three saves as Sussex Tech outshot Conrad, 15-4.

Delmarva Christian 6, Seaford 0: Olivia Anderson and Elizabeth Stevens both scored twice to pace the Royals.

Hannah Czapp and Skyler Bennett also scored for Delmarva Christian.

Bethany Rankin made 10 saves for the Blue Jays.

Baseball

Milford 7, Delmar 2: The Buccaneers scored six runs in the bottom of the first before capturing the Henlopen Southern Division title.

Milford is 9-3 in conference, 11-5 overall with one Henlopen game remaining while the Wildcats are 8-4, 13-4.

Chad Reichold and Michael Robertson combined to pitch a four-hitter for the Bucs, who got two hits and an RBI from Bryce Greenly. Jimmy Kucharzyk, Caden Oplinger, Reichold, and Caden Stanley also drove in one run each.

Delmar’s Christian Murphy had two hits with Hunter Von Arx doubled.

William Penn 6, Woodbridge 1: Jacob Rogers went 3-for-3 and scored a run for the Raiders in the loss.

Holly Grove 6, Delmarva Christian 5: The Royals scored twice in the bottom of the seventh before falling short.

Andrew Workman had two doubles while Michael Briggs added two hits for Delmarva Christian.

BOYS, Wilm. Friends 10, Cape Henlopen 8: The Quakers outscored the Vikings, 3-1, in the fourth quarter to post the win.

Jaycob Trimmer and Luke D’Ambrogi had two goals apiece for Cape with Brendan Kane making seven saves. The Vikings outshot Friends, 19-17.

Tennis

Seeding set for states: Caesar Rodney High’s two doubles teams earned the tops seeds in the girls’ bracket while the Riders’ boys were seeded second behind Tower Hill on four of the five courts as the brackets for the DIAA tennis state tournaments were determined on Wednesday.

The tourneys start on Saturday with first and second rounds at various courts around the state. CR won both the boys’ and girls’ team state titles a year ago.

At boys’ first singles, Tower Hill’s Robby Ward (13-0) is the No. 1 seed while CR’s Rishi Gundakaram (15-0) is No. 2. At girls’ first singles, Wilmington Charter’s Grace Shiau (13-0) is seeded No. 1 while CR’s Halle Parker (9-0) is No. 3.

CR’s two top seeds in the girls’ bracket are Katherine Tamesis-Macaela Thorogood (15-0) at first doubles and Piper Casey-Chloe Mangubat (8-0) at second doubles.

College baseball

DSU stays alive in MEAC tourney: Delaware State edged Maryland-Eastern Shire, 6-5, on Wednesday night to stay alive in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Hornets lost to Florida A&M, 12-2, earlier in the day in the tourney being played at Perdue Stadium. DelState plays again today at 7 p.m. in the double-elimination tournament.

Against UMES, the Hornets used a five-run fourth to go up 6-1 before the Hawks answered with four runs in the sixth. Evan Regez had three hits and three RBI in the contest.

14 Hornets earn academic honors: Fourteen members of the Delaware State baseball team have been honored by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference for their success in the classroom.

Delaware State is tied with North Carolina A&T for tops in the league with 14 MEAC All-Academic selections.

The DSU honorees are: Jacob Bartlett, Austin Bentley, Garrett Coverdale, Lane DeLeon, Travis Dill, Todd Henry, Kyle Mace, Darnel Maisonet, Chris Mako, Sean McGrath, Darrien Ragins, Evan Regez and Gabe Rivera.

College softball

Burton up for national award: Caesar Rodney High grad Rosa’Lynn Burton is one of eight finalists for the Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II National Freshman of the Year award.

A freshman outfielder for Wilmington University, Burton led the Wildcats and finished second in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference with a .463 batting average, while also pacing the league with 88 hits, 57 runs, and 41 stolen bases, all of which were single season program records for the Wildcats.
