Track and field

Ritter at USATF Championships: Emily Ritter (Sussex Tech) of the Rider University track and field team participated in the United States of America Track and Field Outdoor Championships on Thursday evening in the 3,000m steeplechase at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Ritter completed her historic season with a time of 10:23.87, placing 22nd with the top 14 advancing to the finals.

Emma Coburn (New Balance) won the preliminaries with a time of 9:36.90.

The top times from the finals in this meet earn a spot on the 2015 IAAF World Championship team, which competes in Beijing, China August 22-30.

Ritter was invited to compete at the USATF Championships after earning All-America status and placing ninth at the NCAA Championships with a time of 9:54.72, in a meet which also took place in Eugene.

Ritter was the first woman from the Bronc track and field program and just the third athlete ever from the Rider track and field program, to compete in the NCAA Championships.

Rider had never had an All-American in the track and field program until Ritter and she is only the fourth female in Rider history to earn that accolade.

Ritter qualified for Nationals in the 3,000m steeplechase, an event that she never competed in before last year.

The first time she competed in the steeplechase she won the 2014 Rider Invitational. The second time she ran it she broke the Rider record and placed second at 2014 MAAC Championships. She went on to break her own steeplechase record at the 2014 ECAC Championships to qualify for the NCAA

East Regional in Florida last spring.

This year Ritter ran a personal record 9:54.34 at the NCAA Regional May 29 in Jacksonville, Florida, when she placed second in her heat and seventh (of 47) overall to qualify for Eugene.

Earlier this spring she compiled a 9:55.15 clocking at the ECAC Championships to place second and earn All-East honors.

Ritter was named the Most Outstanding Performer at the MAAC Outdoor Championships this spring after winning the steeplechase and placing second in both the 1500m and the 5,000m.

NFL Hens return to UD: Blue Hen alumni and current National Football League players Mike Adams and Gino Gradkowski participated in the final day of the Delaware Youth Football Camp on Friday inside Delaware Stadium.

Both former Blue Hens were active participants in the scrimmage portion of the day, before Adams spoke to the campers and then took questions.

Adams, a member of the 2003 UD national championship squad, has played 11 years in the NFL and competed in the 2014 Super Bowl as a member of the Denver Broncos. Last year Adams earned his first Pro Bowl selection after starting all 16 games and making five interceptions for the Indianapolis Colts.

Gradkowski, currently a member of the Denver Broncos, was a fourth round pick by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2012 NFL Draft and earned a Super Bowl ring with the squad in February, 2013.

Earlier in the week former Blue Hen quarterback Pat Devlin and tight end Nick Boyle also participated in the camp. Boyle was selected by Baltimore in the fifth round of this April’s NFL Draft.

“I always love coming back to Delaware,” Adams said. “I’ll do anything for the kids, and I always enjoy seeing former teammates that I played with here.”

UD names Seneca head coach: John Seneca, who has been a key member of the University of Delaware softball coaching staff the last four years and has served as the interim head coach since April, has been named the program’s head coach, UD Director of Athletics & Recreation Services Eric Ziady announced Friday.

Seneca has served as an assistant coach on the Blue Hen staff since the start of the 2012 season, and has assisted with all aspects of team operations including practices, recruiting and opponent scouting reports.

“I am honored to become the head softball coach at Delaware, and I would like to thank the search committee for the opportunity,” Seneca said.

“Having been a member of the coaching staff for the last four seasons, I feel that I have an excellent rapport with the players and administration. I am excited about the future of the softball program and cannot wait to get started.”

“Following a search process that involved reaching out to many of the country’s top programs, we determined that Coach Seneca was the best fit for our softball program moving forward,” said Ziady. “John has been an integral member of the coaching staff throughout the last four years, and has done a great job providing stability to our program in an interim role the past two months. He is committed to our focus on the overall student athlete experience, and will do a great job helping to develop our softball student athletes academically, athletically, and socially.”

This spring Seneca helped lead Delaware to 33 victories, the fifth most in a UD single season, while the squad set school single season records for runs scored, RBI, doubles and home runs.

Prior to arriving at Delaware, Seneca served as head coach of the Allentown Patriettes from 2006-11, leading the squad to a 201-36 record while competing in ASA, PONY, and USSSA regional and national tournaments. He also was the head coach at Saucon Valley High School from 2006-09, guiding the team to a 68-28 mark.

Seneca, a 4-Star NFCC Master Coach and a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, holds a bachelor of science degree in technical management from DeVry University.

Seneca becomes just the fifth head coach in Delaware softball history since the sport began at UD in 1976.
