Roundup: Cape field hockey team blanks Dover 2-0

Dover High held Cape Henlopen scoreless well into the second half before the Vikings pulled out a 2-0 victory in Henlopen Conference field hockey on Tuesday night.

Catherine Frederick tallied the game-winner with 12:12 remaining before Alia Marshall added an insurance goal with 4:09 left. Tess Bernheimer assited on both goals.

The two goals were the fewest Cape has scored in a game since beating Delmar, 1-0, in the 2013 state finals. The Vikings (3-0) outshot Dover, 18-2, and held a 9-1 advantage in corners.

Riley Shields made two saves for Cape, which hasn’t allowed a goal yet this season.

Brooklyn Peete made eight saves for the Senators (2-1),

Polytech 3, Milford 1: Leading 2-1, Jamie Trabaudo’s second goal of the game, with 14:11 left, sealed the conference win for the Panthers.

Trabaudo also assisted on Emmalee Dellert’s first-half goal for Polytech (3-0). Lauren Lee made five saves for the Panthers, who held slim advantages of 10-9 in shots and 11-9 in corners.

Darby Brennen’s goal, off an assist from Brianna Wells, pulled the Buccanneers within 2-1 with 17:43 remaining. Leah Barnett made six saves.

Lake Forest 7, Laurel 0: Mya Maddox collected three goals and an assist in the second half as the Spartans pulled away after leading 1-0 at halftime.

Kallie Moyer, Joy Springer, Julianna Tyndall and Zara Collison also scored goals with Brooke Tucker stopping six shots. Lake finished with advantages of 26-6 in shots and 15-2 in corners.

The Bulldogs’ Alexandria Ullman made 19 saves.

Woodbridge 1, Indian River 0: The Raiders’ Kelsey Eckert scored the game-winner at the 28:07 mark of the second half.

Sara Davis assisted on the goal for Woodbridge, which outshot IR, 13-1, and held a 16-1 edge in corners.

The Indians’ Madison Thune made three saves.

Sussex Tech 6, Sussex Central 1: Six different players scored goals for the Ravens, who led 4-1 at halftime.

Annie Perdue (1 assist), Aleksandra Bada (2 assists), Zena Lowman, Bridget Johnson, Hannah Venables and Taylor Wroten all scored goals.

Hayley McCabe scored for the Golden Knights while Morgan Burton made 14 saves. Sussex Tech held advantages of 33-2 in shots and 21-1 in corner kicks.

Boys’ soccer

Caesar Rodney 5, Glasgow 0: Chris McPoyle tallied three goals and an assist as the Riders picked up the nonconference victory.

Also for CR, Thomas McPoyle had a goal and three assists with Joshua Bennett scoring the Riders’ other goal. Dillon Rahe made five saves as CR outshot the Dragons, 20-8.

Polytech 9, Wilm. Christian 0: The Panthers netted six first-half goals in the victory.

Lake Forest 7, Del. Public Safety/Security 0: William Parker, Parker Sard and Joseph Sharp tallied two goals apiece to lead the Spartans.

Anthony Oviedo also scored for Lake Forest, which evened its record at 2-2.

Cape Henlopen 5, Sussex Academy 0: Zachary Gelof had two goals and an assist in the Vikings’ victory.

Cape’s other goals came from Drew Mulcahy, Steven Matalavage and Jack Ashby. The Vikings held advantages of 21-1 in shots and 12-0 in corner kicks.

Domenico Santo made 16 shots for the Seahawks.

Salesianum 3, Indian River 0: The Sals scored all three of their goals in the second half of their nonconference win.

IR’s Kevin Calles-Zamora made eight saves. Sallies finished with advantages of 13-3 in shots and 5-2 in corner kicks.

Smyrna 1, St. Thomas More 0: Israel Alvarez’ goal in the 63rd minute lifted the Eagles to the victory.

Wesley Ogden assisted on the goal for Smyrna, which outshot the Ravens, 15-10.

Sussex Central 6, Seaford 0: The Golden Knights tallied three goals in each half of their victory.

Caesar Rodney 6, Woodbridge 0: In a game played Monday, the Riders netted four second-half goals in pulling away to the victory.

Volleyball

Delaware Military 3, Smyrna 1: The Seahawks took the last two sets in the 25-13, 23-25, 25-12, 25-17 nonconference victory. The Eagles are 2-2.

Archmere 3, Polytech 0: The Auks posted a 25-12, 25-12, 25-12 win as the Panthers fell to 3-2.

For Polytech, Kaylee Williams had eight kills and eight digs, Emily Campbell had six kills and 12 digs and Morgan Teszner added 20 assists.

Dover 3, Lake Forest 1: The Senators registered a 25-18, 18-25, 25-23, 25-16 victory in a Henlopen Conference match.

Dover (1-1) was led by Kaela Thomas (4 kills, 2 aces, 3 blocks), Kyla Bonelli (6 aces) and Erin Miller (2 kills, 4 aces, 2 blocks).

Delmarva Christian 3, Sussex Tech 2: The Royals won the final three sets to rally for the 13-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-20, 15-13 victory.

Delmarva Christian was paced by Angela Baker (6 kills, 4 digs), Michaela Brown (5 kills, 5 aces, 5 blocks), Allie Zitvogel (18 digs) and Gabrielle Book (5 kills).

Cape Henlopen 3, Indian River 0: The Vikings earned the Henlopen Conference win by scores of 25-11, 25-3, 27-25.

IR’s Kaya Ziskay had four kills with Julia Bomhardt adding three.

Salisbury Christian, Md. 3, Delmar 2: Salisbury won the final two sets to claim the 25-11, 20-25, 22-25, 25-13, 15-12 victory.

Carly Covington had a team-high 12 kills, five aces and seven digs with Samantha Lehman contributing 16 assists.

College field hockey

Blue Hens up to 12th in poll: The Delaware field hockey team continued to climb the charts as the Blue Hens moved up two spots to No. 12 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches poll on Tuesday.

The lone 8-0 NCAA Division I team in the country, Delaware defeated Bucknell and Pacific this past weekend to set a school record with eight

consecutive wins to start the year. The Hens are just one of four Division I squads with a perfect record.

Delaware will face its highest-ranked opponent this season when it plays at No. 6 Duke on Friday at 6 p.m.

before heading to Richmond for a Sunday noon contest.

Also for the Hens, freshman Lisa Giezeman picked up her second Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week Award. In wins over Bucknell and Pacific, Giezeman notched six points on three goals, including the lone score of the game against the Tigers.

College volleyball

Wesley 3, Immaculata 1: The Wolverines improved to 8-4 with the 25-23, 25-22, 21-25, 25-14 victory.

Shelby Belk had a team-high 13 kills with Gabrielle Guerrera adding 11.

College soccer

MEN, Virginia Tech 4, Delaware 1: The Blue Hens lost their third game in a row to fall to 3-4-1 on Tuesday night.
