Roundup: Camden-Wyoming earns 5-2 win over Maryland in 9-10 softball Eastern Regional

Camden-Wyoming downed Maryland, 5-2, for its second victory in the 9-10 softball Eastern Regional on Sunday in Dallas, Pa.

The Delaware state champions are now 2-0 in the tournament after playing the second of its four pool-play games.

Peyton Shields pitched a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts to pace Camden-Wyoming while adding two hits and two runs scored.

Also leading the way for Camden-yoming were Ashlyn Schmidt (2 hits), Vanessa Gaines (1 hit, 2 RBI), Chloe Donigan (1 hit, 1 run), Kaitlyn Horton (1 run), Alexia Figueroa (1 run) and Sydney Hatch (1 hit).

After an off day today, Camden-Wyoming returns to action on Tuesday with a 9 a.m. contest against New York. It then faces Pennsylvania on Wednesday afternoon.

Big League

Latin America 10, U.S. Southwest 7: Latin America rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to capture the Big League World Series title on Sunday at Lower Sussex Little League.

Latin America, from Puerto Rico, finished 6-1 in the tournament. Latin America’s only loss was a 8-1 setback to Sussex County’s District III on Tuesday.

There were six lead changes in Sunday’s game. Rebecca Skains hit a pair of home runs with four RBI and three runs scored for U.S. Southwest, which beat District III in Saturday’s semifinals.

Senior League

U.S. Southeast 3, Canada 0: Nicole Rodriguez pitched a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts as U.S. Southeast won the Senior League World Series title on Sunday at Lower Sussex Little League.

The Florida squad scored one run in the fourth inning and two more in the sixth to blank Canada. U.S. Southeast finished 7-0 in the tournament.

Baseball

Junior League

New Jersey 19, Camden-Wyoming 7: New Jersey broke the game open with nine runs in the fifth inning to drop Camden-Wyoming into the losers’ bracket of the Eastern Regional on Sunday evening.

Camden-Wyoming is now 1-1 in the tournament, being played in Freehold Township, N.J. The Delaware state champions play again today at 1 p.m. against Pennsylvania in the double-elimination tourney.

On Sunday, Camden-Wyoming trailed 4-2 after two innings and 10-5 after the third. After New Jersey opened up its 19-5 advantage, Camden-Wyoming could only answer with two runs in the bottom of the fifth as the game was ended by the 10-run rule.

Camden-Wyoming, which was outhit 13-6, committed six errors in the game.
