Smyrna High outscored Sussex Tech by 11 in the fourth quarter to put away a 71-55 win over the Ravens in Henlopen Conference Northern Division boys’ basketball on Tuesday night.

The Eagles’ third straight victory put them at 5-2 in the North, 9-2 overall.

Ja’Vier Worthy netted a game-high 24 points, Caleb Matthews had 17 and Jaymeir Garnett scored 11 for Smyrna. Matthews sank three of the Eagles’ four three-pointers.

Smyrna also made 21-of-26 free throws in the contest.

The Ravens got 15 points from Ja’ron Hunt-Fletcher and 11 from Tyzhier Morris.

Milford 75, Delmar 40: The Buccaneers led 49-21 after two quarters before picking up the Henlopen South victory.

Milford is now 7-0 in the South, 8-4 overall.

Girls’ basketball

Milford 55, Delmar 23: The Buccaneers built a 32-8 halftime lead as they improved to 7-0 in the Henlopen South, 11-2 overall.

Rajene Bowe (13 points), Kala Fluitt (11) and Kiarra Brittingham (11) all scored in double figures for Milford.

Brittingham sank three of the Bucs’ five three-pointers.

Haley Rogers led Delmar with 10 points.

College basketball

WOMEN, Delaware 67, William & Mary 63: The Blue Hens received 20-plus points from senior Courtni Green for the third straight game in the Colonial Athletic Association win.

Green collected a game-high 23 points with six rebounds and three assists for Delaware (10-8, 5-2 CAA). The guard is averaging 14.9 points with 2.7 3-pointers per game in seven league contests this season.

Freshman Nicole Enabosi added 12 points and seven rebounds while sophomore Makeda Nicholas notched eight points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.

The Hens held a 14-point advantage with less than five minutes remaining in regulation before the Tribe (12-6, 3-4 CAA) capitalized off of Delaware fouls. A layup from Bianca Boggs with 11 seconds on the clock cut the game to 65-63 before Green knocked down two free throws of her own for the win.

College baseball

Hens picked sixth in CAA: The Delaware baseball team was picked sixth in the Colonial Athletic Association preseason poll while sophomore righthander Ron Marinaccio was selected preseason honorable mention, the league announced on Tuesday.

The Blue Hens return 18 letterwinners from last year’s team that finished 26-24 overall, finished fifth in the CAA with an 11-13 league mark, and advanced to the final day of the conference tournament.

UNC-Wilmington, which captured the 2015 conference tournament championship, was selected to defend its title as the Seahawks collected 63 points and seven first-place votes.

Marinaccio was named to the CAA All-Rookie Team last year, when he also was tabbed the UD Pitching MVP. He appeared in 11 games while starting 10 during the campaign, finishing 4-3 with a 4.11 earned run average.

College indoor track & field

Wesley ranked 18th nationally: The Wesley College men’s track and field team was ranked No. 18 in the latest NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field rankings.

The Wolverines jumped from 29th in the first poll of the season.

Wesley made the leap in rankings thanks in large part to their performance over the weekend at the Gotham Cup in Staten Island. The Wolveroines have several athletes among this year’s top national qualifiers.

Anthony Simpson has put up Division III’s fastest time in the 60-meter while Dominic McAnulty set the bar for Division III in the 400-meter this past weekend.

Two Wolverines honored: The Capital Athletic Conference announced that Wesley College track and field athletes Dominic McAnulty and Evelina Sloboh have been named Capital Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week.

McAnulty posted the fastest time in Division III in the 400 meters at the NYC Gotham Cup. He crossed in a time of 48.71, converted to 49.49 due to the size of the track. In addition to setting the fastest time nationally this season, his mark also broke the Wesley school record.

Wesley freshman Sloboh earned set CAC and school records in the 60 meter dash last weekend. Competing at the NYC Gotham Cup, Sloboh raced to a time of 7.81 seconds in the 60 meters. Her time ranks seventh in the nation this winter.

College bowling

DSU’s Merklinger shines: Delaware State sophomore Chelsey Merklinger had her best tournament of the season to lead the Hornets to a 7-4 overall record at the storm-shortened Kutztown Invitational last weekend.

DSU was 4-1 in regular team games and 3-3 in Baker competition during the tournament. Each Hornet traditional game victory was against a nationally-ranked opponent.

Merklinger had a total pinfall of 1,134 for a season-best 226.8 average in five traditional games, tops among all 106 tournament competitors. She topped the 200 mark in each contest, including a high of 242, her second best score of the season.

Merklinger also had scores of 236, 232 and two games of 212 during the tournament to raise her season average to a team-best 201.8 in 29 games (5828 total pinfall).

Amber MacLeod was second on the Hornets with a total pinfall of 1007, 21st among all Kutztown Invitational bowlers. She rolled 200-or-better in four games, including a high 223.
