High school football referee Mike Abbatiello died Friday night while officiating the Woodbridge-Caravel Division II state tournament game in Greenwood.

Abbatiello was in his 40th season as a referee.

The Ocean View resident was the head referee Friday night. He collapsed at the end of a play on the first drive of the game with 7:16 left in the first quarter.

Trainers and coaches from both sidelines were at Abbatiello’s side almost immediately. An ambulance was already at the game and medical personnel were seen performing chest compression as Abbatiello was being loaded into the ambulance.

The game continued after a brief warmup period for both teams.

Abbatiello’s officiating crew was informed of his death after the conclusion of the game. The remaining officials, gameday staff, Woodbridge coaches and players huddled together for a prayer in the end zone before walking off the field.

A moment of silence for Abbatiello was held before kickoff of Smyrna’s Division I semifinal game against William Penn on Saturday night.

Division II championship set: Wilmington Friends defeated St. Georges 20-6 to set up a matchup against Woodbridge for the Division II championship Saturday, Dec. 3, at 5:30 p.m. at the University of Delaware.

Woodbridge (12-0), the tournament’s top seed, knocked off Caravel 21-6 on Friday night. The Blue Raiders are making their first appearance in the championship game.

Wilmington Friends (11-1) made the state title game for the first time since 1984, when it won the championship.

Woodbridge dealt the Quakers their only loss of the season, a 35-7 result in the third week of the season.

College basketball

MEN, Montana State 91, Delaware State 66: Harald Frey scored a career-high 19 points and led five players in double figures as host Montana State beat Delaware State 91-66 on Saturday.

Frey was 6 of 10 from the field including five 3-pointers for the Bobcats (4-2). Zach Green added 16 points and led the team with 10 rebounds. Sam Neumann had 14 points and six rebounds, Joe Mvuezolo Jr. had 11 points and five rebounds and Quinton Everett chipped in 10 points.

Green and Frey both sank 3-pointers as part of a 13-0 surge by Montana State to open the second period and go up 47-36 after trailing 36-34 at the break. Frey and Everett hit back-to-back 3-pointers to extend the Bobcats lead to 17 points, 76-49, with 7:49 remaining and they cruised to the win.

Kavon Waller scored 17 points and grabbed five rebounds for the Hornets (1-5) who are on a five-game skid.
