CAMDEN — It was apparent 10 minutes into the game that the Caesar Rodney-Sussex Tech girls’ soccer match was going to be different than the last two years.

The Riders scored twice right away and Alexa Faulmino finished with a hat trick as CR defeated the Ravens 6-0 on Tuesday night. Aleya Cummings scored twice and Janiah Moore had a goal for the Riders (3-0).

Sussex Tech (2-2) had won the last two meetings between the two teams.

“We were tired of losing to them,” said CR coach Darrell Gravatt. “We felt like we’ve had a good product the last two years but couldn’t get it done. We really wanted that revenge match and we got it tonight. We’re blessed with a lot of talent and it showed.”

Faulmino needed about three minutes to get on the scoresheet.

She broke free down the left flank to run down a long pass from Rachel Smith. Once she collected it she was able to stay in stride to outrun the Sussex Tech defense and slide a shot into the net.

“She always seems like she’s unstoppable,” Gravatt said. “It takes a handful to hold her down, and then if that happens it opens up seams for others.”

“After that first goal it felt like the momentum changed,” Faulmino said. “We were constantly at them after that.”

Cummings doubled the lead a few minutes later. She beat the defense to a cross in the box and was able to steer an off-balanced shot to the center of the goal.

She added her second near the end of the first half on a similar scramble in the box.

Faulmino scored twice in the second half before Moore got on the board. Rebekah Bernat, Rachel Smith and Grace Wilt had assists for the Riders.

“I thought we played really well as a cohesive unit,” Faulmino said. “Everybody played their role.”

“We have a lot of players who can do a lot of damage,” Gravatt said. “It’s not just one or two players. I thought our keeper was outstanding and our back four to get the clean sheet. Our midfield put them under a lot of pressure and our forwards, my goodness I wouldn’t trade them for anyone else in the state.”

Caesar Rodney lost two players from last year’s squad, which went 12-3 in the regular season and finished runner-up in the state tournament. This year’s team has seven seniors, including Faulmino, who has committed to play at the University of Delaware.

“I think we’re capable of anything we set our mind to,” Faulmino said. “As long as we work hard and play like we can play we should be fine.”
