Public comment sought on bodycams for Delaware officers

Posted

Public comment sessions regarding the use of body-worn cameras by Delaware police officers are upcoming, the state’s Department of Safety and Homeland Security has announced.

The sessions will be held Thursday at the Dover Police Department, 400 S. Queen St., and Sept. 9 at the New Castle County Police Department, 3601 N. DuPont Highway, New Castle. Both begin at 6 p.m.

The sessions will be hosted by the Delaware Council on Police Training, as required by House Bill 195, which was signed into law in July by Gov. John Carney. These regulations will address standards governing body camera use, activation, electronic storage and dissemination.

A subcommittee will receive all public comments on the required standards and propose a set of regulations to the council, which will then make a decision on the final rules. Members of the public will also have an opportunity to submit written comments.

HB 195 requires state agencies to implement the body camera program through the procurement of cameras, development of a central data-storage program and provision of necessary personnel. Gov. Carney’s fiscal year 2022 budget includes $3.6 million for the development and deployment of body cameras.
