DOVER — Video surveillance played a large role in confirming the whereabouts of a 21-year-old Camden man charged with murder this week in connection with a January homicide, police said.

According to a Dover police officer in an affidavit of probable cause, Darryl T. Garner, of Wesley Street, allegedly was seen meeting with a person later found dead near railroad tracks between Walker Road and Division Street.

The date and time of the alleged offense was listed as Jan. 25, 2015, at 10:29 a.m., police said in papers.

Police said Mr. Garner, presumed innocent unless proven guilty, allegedly said in a taped interview on Jan. 25 at approximately 5:47 p.m. that he met with a person whose name was redacted in court papers intending to commit a robbery on Virginia Avenue in Dover.

According to Mr. Garner, the persons ran in separate directions when they realized that the wrong man had been targeted, papers said. Mr. Garner said he ran south on Saulsbury Road, but detectives reviewing several business surveillance videos did not see him do that, according to papers.

Also, police said, they never received any robbery or attempted robbery calls on Virginia Avenue or anywhere in that area.

Authorities said video surveillance showed two persons making a left at Queen and Division streets, toward the railroad tracks where a person was allegedly murdered.

“The video surveillance shows the last time (name redacted) was seen alive,” police wrote in court documents.

Based on surveillance video, police said in papers, detectives determined Mr. Garner allegedly was untruthful about clothing he was wearing at the time.

Authorities said a search warrant was conducted by detectives who “obtained the clothing Darryl Garner was wearing on the surveillance footage meeting with (name redacted).”

In documents, police said a jacket tested positive for gunshot residue, with most of it being on the right sleeve.

Authorities noted Mr. Garner is right-handed, according to papers.

“Darryl Garner stated in the interview that he does not mess with guns and there is no reason why he should have GSR on him or his clothing,” police said in documents.

Police said in documents a person whose name was redacted left with Mr. Garner in possession of a .40 caliber handgun, with mixed brass and silver ammunition, “An ounce of weed” (28 grams of marijuana) and $60 in United States currency.

According to the documents, a person suffered one gunshot wound each to his upper body and head, and the State Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death a homicide.

According to authorities in documents, “Two spent .40 caliber shell casings were recovered from the scene near the body. Also located were two unspent .40 caliber rounds of mixed brass and silver ammunition.”

Police said a person “was found, his pants pocket was turned out indicating he was robbed. He was missing his handgun, his marijuana, and his money.”

Mr. Garner allegedly was found with 8.7 grams of marijuana and $20 in United States currency when he was arrested, authorities said.

Dover police said an “extensive search” of the area was conducted while looking for a firearm, which was not located.

Charges against Mr. Garner included first-degree murder, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by person prohibited, and theft under $1,500.

Police said Mr. Garner has been incarcerated since Jan. 26 on an unrelated charge of second-degree rape.

He was given a $50,000 cash bail regarding the recent case, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for Nov. 20.
