DOVER — The vast reach of social media was crucial to identifying a suspect in a convenience store robbery on July 29, authorities said Wednesday.

Describing “an overwhelming response of tips from the public through social media and by telephone,” Delaware State Police Master Cpl. Gary Fournier reported that Dylan M. Chambers, 25, of Smyrna, was allegedly involved in an incident at a Shore Stop at 3668 N. DuPont Highway.

More than 20 tips through Facebook and voice messages left for a detective identified Mr. Chambers, police said, along with “numerous” tips through Delaware Crime Stoppers.

Earlier, state police issued a news release seeking the public’s help in identifying a suspect shown in surveillance videos during the incident.

In addition, Cpl. Fournier said, Mr. Chambers was arrested a month ago from an alleged robbery in Smyrna, and police there “put out a press release on him about his arrest which triggered the public to inform him of his name.”

Arrest warrants were obtained for first-degree robbery and wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony, according to police.

State Police ask anyone with information on Mr. Chambers’ whereabout to contact Detective P. Surowiec at 698-8439. Information can also be provided by calling Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333, online at www.delaware.crimestoppersweb.com, or by sending an anonymous tip by text to 274637 (CRIMES) using the keyword “DSP.

The State Police concluded its news release with “Thank you again to all that provide information.”
