DOVER –– This Saturday, a 25-mile cycling race will bring attention to an infrequently discussed men’s health issue –– prostate cancer.

The eighth annual Pedal Away Prostate Cancer Bike Race, sponsored by the Delaware Prostate Cancer Coalition, is intended get a prostate cancer discussion going across the state.

“Many of us have family or friends with prostate cancer. This event is a great way for people to show their support,” said Dr. Michael Zaragoza, founder of the event.

Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among men in Delaware.

Saturday’s race is open to bikers of all abilities and participants will be separated by age groups and those riding competitively and non-competitively. The top finishers in each category will receive prizes. 2015’s first-place racer came in with a time just over 52 minutes.

The timed race will be followed by a health fair which includes free access to health care screenings, vendors and massages on site. The fair is free to participants and the public.

Racers will get a free picnic lunch and non-racers may join in on the picnic by purchasing a $5 meal ticket.

The funds raised from both registration and lunch fees will go toward the Prostate Cancer Coalition which provides free prostate screenings across the state and promotes education and support.

The race starts promptly at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Eden Hill Medical Center located at 200 Banning Street in Dover. Online registration can be completed at www.bikereg.com/pedal-away-prostate-cancer.

Online registration is $45 and on-site registration the morning of the race is $50. On-site registration ends at 9:10 a.m.

This year’s event is also designated as a 40K cycling road race for the 2016 Delaware Senior Olympics.
