WOODSIDE — Shaina Reed stood on second base, throwing her arms up in the air as she shrugged her shoulders and smiled at her third base coach.

She was inches away from a home run, but had to settle for a double when her fly ball hit the top of the fence in center, popped up in the air and came back into the field of play.

But Reed wasn’t worried. She knew one of her Polytech High teammates would bring her home.

Reed had three hits and scored three times as the Panthers remained unbeaten on the young softball season thanks to a 10-0 victory over Caesar Rodney in six innings on Wednesday afternoon. Taylor Pechin, Brandi Dalious and Morgan Dodge had two RBI apiece for Polytech (3-0).

“It shows how strong we are one through nine,” Reed said. “All our girls can hit. I have faith in all the girls in the lineup that they’re going to hit the ball hard.”

Reed also pitched six shutout innings and still hasn’t given up a run this season. She finished with four strikeouts while allowing a hit and a pair of walks.

“We’re doing a great job defensively,” said Polytech coach Jenn Bradshaw. “Everybody is on their toes, in position and making sure they are mentally prepared if the ball comes to them.”

Dalious gave the Panthers the lead in the second inning when she lined a double off the fence in right. It allowed Hayley Freiss to scamper all the way around from first to score.

Reed had a leadoff single to start the third inning and stole second before Pechin singled her home. Whitney Demora also scored in the inning on an RBI-groundout by Amanda Waishes.

Polytech broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth when the Panthers pushed across six runs.

Taylor Bond led off the inning by reaching first on an error then Dalious doubled again to put two runners in scoring position with no outs. Dodge was up next and singled through a hole in the infield to score both of them.

Reed then picked up her lone RBI of the day when she blasted her shot off the fence. Pechin knocked her in with a single and Waishes also ended up scoring in the inning when Bond drove her in.

Dalious finished the scoring with a liner into the gap in the sixth inning that plated Freiss.

“The more hits we connected on, the more confident we got at the plate,” Dalious said. “Once one of us lights the spark, we all start pounding the ball.”

“It’s really exciting to see,” Bradshaw said. “We have some young kids coming up that are stepping up in a big way. One to nine in the order we seem so be scoring runs, so it’s working out for us.”

Caesar Rodey (0-3) came close to scoring in the top of the third when Jordan Moseley singled and eventually made it to third base with one out.

Reed got her out off a comebacker to the mound by forcing a rundown in between third and home before retiring the next batter to escape the inning without any damage.

“We’ve had runners on third but we haven’t given up that run yet,” Reed said. “It shows how we are in pressure situations and I think that’s good.”
