DOVER — A Wilmington woman was killed in a crash that involved five vehicles and closed Del. 1 in the area of Fast Landing Road (Del. 42) around 1:52 p.m. Thursday.

Authorities said a 62-year-old woman from Wilmington, in a 2001 Volvo S60, lost control of her car and hit Brandon R. Cooper, 26, of Calhoun, Georgia, driving a 2016 Jeep Wrangler southbound in the right lane of Del. 1, approaching the same area.

As the initial crash was occurring, Brian M. Mathe, 38, of Middletown, operating a 2015 Honda Pilot southbound in the left lane of Del. 1 behind the Jeep Wrangler, was able to avoid the collision but was rear ended by Kelli J. Amaya, 46, of Middletown, driving a 2011 GMC Terrain, police said.

As these two collisions were simultaneously occurring, Vicki L. Johnson, 60, of Smyrna, driving a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado, pulling an enclosed horse trailer, tried to maneuver between the two collisions and struck the left side front door of the Volvo as it was spinning out of control, police said.

Once all vehicles came to stop, the Jeep Wrangler became engulfed in flames, however, no one was injured as a result of the fire.

The 62-year-old woman, who was properly restrained was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin. A 63-year-old male passenger in the Volvo, was not properly restrained and was airlifted by Delaware State Police Aviation to Christiana Medical Center where he was admitted with undetermined injuries.

Mr. Cooper was properly restrained and was transported by EMS to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital where he was treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries.

Mr. Mathe was properly restrained and was uninjured in the crash.

Ms. Amaya was properly restrained and was transported by EMS to KGH where she was admitted with undetermined injuries.

Ms. Johnson was properly restrained and was uninjured in the crash. A horse that was in the trailer was also uninjured in the incident.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into the incident. Alcohol was not a factor for any of the operators. Del. 1 southbound and northbound were closed for approximately three and a half hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
