MILLVILLE — An Ocean View Police officer suffered minor injury during a Sunday afternoon arrest involving an alleged bicycle theft, authorities said.

The officer was struck and kicked during an attempt to take Christopher A. Thompson, 34, of Ocean View, into custody following the report of a bicycle theft in progress, Delaware State Police. He did not require medical attention.

The officer spotted Mr. Thompson after a description of the bike and a suspect were provided by DSP, spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said. Troopers were initially dispatched at 3:29 p.m. to Fox’s Pizza at 200 Atlantic Ave.

Mr. Thompson was located on Atlantic Avenue, and the Ocean View officer told him to wait until DSP arrived, Cpl. Jaffe said. He then began to walk away, authorities said.

The officer then took Mr. Thompson into custody with a bystander’s assistance, police said.

Mr. Thompson was taken to Troop 4 in Georgetown and determined to be under the influence of alcohol, police said.

Charges included second-degree assault of a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with force or violence, theft, disorderly conduct and operating a bicycle on highways while DUI. Mr. Thompson was arraigned before Justice of the Peace Court and held at Sussex Correctional Institution in Georgetown on $8,501 cash only bond.
