DOVER — A new Starbucks is coming to the city, but not just any Starbucks.
The popular coffee company will set up shop at 1481 N. DuPont Highway in August with a store designated as a Military Family Store.
“This designation is a way of honoring our partners (employees) who are veterans and military spouses, as well as connecting with the military community in the wider Dover area, especially Dover Air Force Base,” Starbucks officials said.
“We are excited to serve this community, and hope to make a positive impact on the lives of active duty and transitioning service members, as well as their families.”
The store will help spur Starbucks veteran hiring efforts and connect to the community through relationships with the local military base and with veterans’ service organizations, according to Starbuck officials.
David Skocik, president and co-founder of the Delaware Veterans Coalition, said he’s happy that this type establishment is coming to Dover.
“It’s great,” he said. “They’re not only trying to help out military veterans, but spouses as well.
“It’s a wonderful feeling knowing that people or companies are more willing to help veterans or service members.” As a Military Family Store, Starbucks plans to honor employees and customers through design elements, such as special murals. Stores also will offer merchandise expressing appreciation for military service.
The first similar Starbucks stores with a military community focus were established about a year ago at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Tacoma, Washington, and near the Joint Base military facility in San Antonio, Texas.
The company’s goal is to have a total of 12 Military Family Stores nationwide.
In November 2013 Starbucks made a company goal to hire 10,000 veterans and active duty military spouses by 2018.
Starbucks officials said the company has since hired and placed more than 3,700 veterans and military spouse candidates into roles at Starbucks.
“At the store we will work to make a difference by showing our support through community-related events such as deployment ceremonies, homecomings and other locally relevant activities,” Starbucks officials said. “We will host networking events in-store, on-base or in conjunction with our nonprofit partner.”
