FELTON — A 47-year-old Harrington Police officer was driving home from work when his vehicle fatally struck a man standing in the roadway early Saturday morning, authorities said.

Officer Carl J. Klotz was uninjured in the crash and remained on regular duty status afterward, according to Harrington Police Chief Norman Barlow on Monday.

Mr. Klotz was alone at the time of the incident at approximately 1:40 a.m. on eastbound Del. 12 (Midstate Road) east of Felton.

Officers are permitted to take police cars home after shifts, the chief said.

According to Delaware State Police, Christopher Thompson, 32, of Coatesville, Pennsylvania, died at the scene.

Chief Barlow could not recall any other officer-involved fatal vehicle crashes in the past.

According to preliminary investigation, Mr. Klotz was driving a 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe that struck Mr. Thompson, who was attempting to fix a mechanical problem on a trailer he was driving.

Authorities said Mr. Thompson had placed a floor jack under the driver’s side tires of a 30-foot enclosed box trailer and was standing in the roadway when struck by the Tahoe’s right front bumper. He landed on the Tahoe’s hood and windshield before falling into the eastbound lane.

Part of the trailer remained in the roadway after Mr. Thompson pulled the truck onto the shoulder, police said.

The accident occurred on Del. 12 east of Chimney Hill Road.

Police said Mr. Thompson was dressed in all black clothing at the time. Alcohol, drugs and/or excessive speed were not believed to be factors in the crash, according to investigators.

A female passenger seated in the back of truck was not injured, police said.

Mr. Klotz was wearing a seatbelt at the time of impact, police said.

Del. 14 was closed for approximately five hours as the Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated and cleared the scene.

Investigation is ongoing, authorities said Monday.
