DOVER — A Milton man pled guilty to first-degree vehicular homicide Monday morning regarding the death of a Verizon employee struck while standing behind his work truck last year.

Zachary M. Krytzer, 27 at the time of the crash on June 7, 2016 in the Little Heaven area, will be sentenced on May 23 in Kent County Superior Court.

Judge Robert B. Young ordered a pre-sentence investigation into Krytzer’s background after accepting the guilty plea. Bail was revoked, according to the Delaware Department of Justice.

Heath B. Janssen, 41, of Dover, had just checked phone lines under a manhole cover on Del. 1 (Bay Road) south of Clapham Road when he was struck by a southbound 2002 Mitsubishi Montero at approximately 1:55 p.m. He was placing equipment in back of a Verizon Ford F36 box truck when struck on the southbound shoulder.

Mr. Janssen was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Delaware State Police said Mr. Janssen’s vehicle was surrounded by cones while parked north of the Valero gas station at 7865 Bay Road south of Dover. Authorities said at the time that the Montero “drifted onto the southbound shoulder and struck a mailbox and then a road reflector before striking and pinning Jansen to the rear of his work vehicle. ...”

According to investigators, the Verizon truck was pushed forward approximately 36 feet while the Montero traveled southbound 23 feet after the collision before stopping.

At the time of arrest, Mr. Krytzer was also charged with driving under the influence of drugs.

Deputy Attorney General Kathleen Dickerson prosecuted the case.

The DSP Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated the incident. Police said witnesses reported seeing Krytzer’s vehicle weaving between both southbound lanes of Del. 1 before the crash.
