NEW CASTLE — Delaware Post-1 had little trouble scoring runs against Fox Post-2 in the first of two games to decide the American Legion baseball state championship.
But in the second game, Shawn Dulin found a way to shut Delaware Post-1 down and deliver the title to Middletown Post-25.
Dulin, out of Smyrna High, pitched all nine innings, allowed just one run and scattered five hits as Middletown Post-25 won 6-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Wilson Field in New Castle. The squad, which draws players from the Smyrna and Middletown area, will represent Delaware at the Mid-Atlantic Regional in Leesburg, Va. Aug. 3-7.
Delaware Post-1 had defeated Fox Post-2 12-6 in the earlier game. All three teams had one loss in the double-elimination tournament headed into Wednesday.
Fox Post-2, the Dover-area team, ends the American Legion season with an overall record of 22-7. It was the only team to defeat Middletown Post-25 in the tournament, a 13-9 victory on Tuesday which set up the three-team doubleheader on Wednesday.
Fox Post-2 was hampered by three errors in the top of the third which led to an eight-run inning by Delaware Post-1.
The Dover squad originally led 2-0 after the bottom of the second thanks to Joey Haass’ two-run single. But Delaware Post-1 scored the next 11 runs of the contest.
Garrett Lawson got Fox Post-2 on the board again in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run.
Fox Post-2 scored three more in the seventh to cut Delaware Post-1’s lead to 11-6. Jake Williams drove home the first run of the inning with a liner into left with the bases loaded.
Lawson followed with a near-grand slam that scored a pair. His long flyball to left hit off the top of the chain-linked fence before bouncing straight up into the air and falling back into the field of play.
Lawson finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Adrian Hill also had a multi-hit game for Fox Post-2 with a 2-for-2 performance at the plate.
Hill, Carter Chasanov, Kendall Small and Sean Hanhauser each scored a run for Fox Post-2.
Delaware Post-1 had 13 hits and six of its nine starters recorded two hits or more. Joseph Cautillo had three RBI and Dan Mersman scored three times.
Dulin stymied that offense in the afternoon game though. He threw 96 pitches on the day, with only one strikeout but kept the ball down in the zone, forcing 16 groundouts.
Delaware Post-1 led Middletown Post-25 1-0 until Jared Gillis, also a Smyrna High product, tie the game with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Middletown Post-25 then took the lead with four runs in the seventh and added an insurance run in the eighth.
Another Smyrna grad, Ryan Seymour went 2-for-4 and scored a run for Middletown Post-25. Brandon Rohrer paced the offense with a 3-for-3 performance and a run scored.
