DOVER — A 22-year-old Dover man pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide Wednesday morning following an alleged October 2015 home invasion in Rodney Village that resulted in a teenage girl’s death, officials said.

Jacob H. Leager was sentenced to eight years in prison, which was suspended for time already served. Six months of Level IV home confinement were ordered, followed by a year of Level III probation and then two years restitution only Level I probation.

Kent Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Clark issued a no-contact order with the family of Haley Henwood, 18, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who authorities said was shot and killed while waiting in a vehicle during an alleged home invasion on Oct. 17, 2015 on John Clark Road.

Delaware State Police investigation determined that Leager followed two fleeing assailants (later charged with first-degree murder) from his home after his 52-year-old father Clifton was shot to death inside, and mortally wounded Ms. Henwood when he discharged a handgun into the vehicle.

Leager was arrested on March 3, 2016, and indicted on Aug. 1, 2016. He was initially charged with manslaughter.

The judge also mandated that Leager pay restitution to Ms. Henwood’s family, maintain full-time employment while on probation and submit to a substance abuse evaluation.

Deputy Attorney General Jason Cohee prosecuted the case, and attorney Anthony Capone represented Leager.
