DOVER — Devaughn Mallory has received his release from the Delaware State University basketball program, school officials confirmed.

The 6-foot-7 Mallory started 19 games for the Hornets as a sophomore and played in 24 contests. He averaged 10.2 points per game and was Delaware State’s leading rebounder with 6.2 a game.

He missed seven games in the 2016-2017 season due to a calf injury. The Hornets went 2-5 during his absence.

He had started all 14 games for DSU up until his injury.

Mallory, a Polytech High product, won the 2014-15 Gatorade Delaware Player-of-the-Year award when he helped the Panthers finish as the DIAA state tournament runner-up. He also finished on the DSBA All-State First Team as a senior and scored more than 1,000 points in his high school career.

Mallory only averaged 13 minutes a game as a freshman at DSU before having a breakout season last year. In what turned out to be his final game with the Hornets, Mallory led them with 16 points and nine rebounds in a MEAC Tournament first round defeat to Bethune-Cookman.

“My shot selection and my percentages have gotten a lot better from before,” he said during this past season. “Back then (as a freshman) I was nervous to take shots but this year I feel more free on the court like I did in high school.”

With Mallory transferring, the Hornets do not have any returning players who played high school basketball in Delaware.

He is the second player with local ties to transfer in the last two seasons.

Todd Hughes, a Smyrna native who played for Smyrna High and Sanford School in high school, transferred from Delaware State to Virginia Union after his sophomore season a year ago.

Hughes averaged 7.9 points a game for Virginia Union in 2016-2017 in 17.4 minutes a game.
