FELTON — Despite scoring six runs in the second inning, the Lake Forest High softball team knew it likely would need another big inning on Tuesday.

Some home runs took care of that.

Lake Forest belted three homers on its way to a 10-6 Henlopen Conference softball victory over Smyrna High. It is the fifth consecutive win for the Spartans, who improved to 9-2.

Brooke Glanden, Kerrigan Simpson and Kayla Thompson provided the home runs for Lake Forest.

The Spartans were up 6-0 after two innings but Smyrna cut that advantage to 6-4 after the top of the fourth. Glanden made sure Lake would extend its lead once again, blasting a long fly ball over the wall in the first plate appearance of the bottom of the fourth.

“I take the same approach every time,” Glanden said. “I just go in there knowing if I see a good pitch, I’m going to hit it. Most of the time I’m hitting, there’s people on base so I know I have to get them in.”

By the time Thompson came to bat, there were two runners on base. She drove them all in with one swing, sending a three-run shot to left-center for a 10-4 lead.

“I knew what I had to do to better my team and help us push forward,” Thompson said. “We have a lot of confidence in ourselves to put runs on the board and try to win the inning.”

Smyrna (9-3) added a pair of runs in the final inning, but the four-run fourth had given Lake Forest enough of a cushion to hold on.

“I was worried we didn’t have enough because Smyrna is definitely a tough team,” said Lake Forest coach Ashlie Tatman. “They’re definitely really good competition for us. Our bats were on and if it wasn’t for that, who knows where we would be.”

The Spartans raced out to their early lead with a huge two-out rally in the bottom of the second.

Mya Maddox knocked in the first run of the day with an infield single. Kaitlyn Stahre then doubled in two runs before Glanden followed with another double to plate Stahre.

Simpson, Lake’s cleanup hitter, capped off the inning with a two-run homer to left.

“You just got to stay relaxed up there,” Simpson said. “Batting fourth I think is a hard spot but you’ve got to stay calm and keep swinging.”

Stahre also struck out eight while walking just one to earn the victory on the mound.

Smyrna was led by Kayla Wilson’s RBI-triple and Alexis Moore who went 2-for-4. Autum Wilson also drove in a run for Smyrna while Madison Drummond and Kaelyn Press each doubled.

Lake Forest has only last once to a Henlopen Conference opponent this season. Five of Lake’s final seven games are also against teams from the Henlopen Conference.

“This will help set the tone for the last stretch of the season,” Thompson said. “It makes us feel good about what we can do going forward.”
