The Wesley College baseball team celebrated Senior Day on Sunday afternoon and it was a pair of seniors who gave a pair of outstanding efforts in a sweep of Capital Athletic Conference rival Marymount.

Eric Willey (Woodbridge High) went the distance on the mound in game one, tossing nine innings for a complete-game victory. He scattered six hits, allowing just two earned runs as the Wolverines edged the Saints 4-3.

In game two, KeAndre Jones provided the game-winning hit, a walk-off single to right field in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Wolverines a 5-4 victory.

Wesley (10-5 CAC, 17-12 overall) extended its winning streak to eight straight games and clinched a spot in the conference tournament for the fourth straight year. The Wolverines are only a game out of first place.

In the final frame of the nightcap, Cody Dmiterchik (Cape Henlopen) led off with a single and moved to third on a Marymount error. Jones then brought home the game-winning run with a single that allowed the Wolverines to walk off with the sweep.

Delaware 8, Hofstra 4: The Blue Hens went ahead for good with two runs in the seventh and then added three insurance runs in the ninth to clinch a weekend Colonial Athletic Association sweep.

Delaware (4-5 CAA, 21-11) clinched its first conference series sweep on the road since 2012. The Hens outscored the Pride (8-24, 1-7) 29-11 and outhit them 47-20 during the weekend.

The Hens have now won four straight games and five of their last six heading into an eight-game homestand.

Delaware second baseman Nick Tierno went 4-for-4 and scored three runs and leftfielder Jordan Glover collected three hits and recorded RBI doubles in both the seventh and ninth innings.

Relief pitcher Nick Spadafino (Dover) got the win, improving to 3-2 with 1.1 innings of work.

Hornets drop twinbill: Norfolk State downed Delaware State, 6-0, 6-2, in a MEAC doubleheader on Sunday.

The Hornets, who have lost four games in a row, are now 5-25.

College softball

Hornets sweep Hampton: The Delaware State softball team increased its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference winning streak to five by defeating Hampton, 6-4 and 7-2.

For DSU (16-16, 9-2 MEAC), the pair of victories snapped a four-game losing streak to Hampton.

Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh in the opener, DSU pulled off a thrilling comeback victory thanks to Sandy Hawthorne connecting on a game-winning three-run homer.

Nicole Gazzola (four hits) extended her hitting streak to 12 games and stole a pair of bases to push her MEAC-leading total to 26. Infielder Vanessa Washington went 2-for-3, highlighted by a two-run single,

In the second game, Haley Jones put the Hornets back on top in the fourth inning with a towering leadoff homer over the right field wall. Senior Rochelle Sablay then drove in outfielder Mika Lumsden and Gazzola to give DelState a 5-2 lead.

Wesley takes split: Wesley earned a critical win over Capital Athletic Conference opponent York, winning 3-2 in game one before dropping game two, 8-0.

The Wolverines are now 4-4 in the CAC, 11-11 overall.

Lindsay Siok (Milford) tossed seven innings for the complete-game victory while Nina Marcano went 3-for-3 and drove in all three Wesley runs.

In the fifth, with two down and the tying run on, York’s Joanna Marmo launched a deep shot to center field, but Lily Engel (Polytech) reached up and snagged at the fence to keep it in the ballpark and maintain the Wesley lead.

Delaware 5, UNC-Wilmington 1: Mariah Kondravy delivered a bases-loaded double in the top of the seventh inning in the Blue Hens win.

Delaware (24-13, 6-3 CAA) entered the top of the seventh inning tied 1-1 with the Seahawks (22-17, 2-6 CAA), but loaded the bases with one out after Mattie Nuccio walked, Leanna Gearhart legged out a bunt single and Gabby Klecko reached on a fielder’s choice. Kondravy then smacked a double to left field, driving home all three runners to put the Hens on top.

High school athletics

CR hosting recruiting talk: Caesar Rodney High will host a presentation on the realities of college recruiting on April 18 at 7 p.m.

National keynote speaker Jack Renkens is hosting the presentation. He founded Recruiting Realities for the purpose of “debunking the myths and presenting the facts about athletic recruiting for student-athletes, their families, coaches and school counselors.”

The event is being held in CR’s auditorium.
