Cape Henlopen High downed Dover, 9-1, in a Henlopen North softball game on Wednesday afternoon.
The Vikings improved to 2-1 in the North while evening their overall record at 2-2.
The Senators fell to 0-3 in the North, 0-4 overall.
Delmar 12, Early College 1: Josie Hollamon, Ashlyn Tapman and Ally Marly had two hits apiece for the Wildcats in the South victory.
De’Lynn Williams had the only hit for the Hornets.
Baseball
Indian River 12, Woodbridge 3: The Indians trailed 3-2 in the top of the third before scoring the game’s last 10 runs in the South win.
Roman Keith, who homered, Frank Bunting and Kyle Coffey all contributed two hits to IR’s total of 11.
Laurel 12, Seaford 7: The Bulldogs took a 12-3 lead into the seventh inning before picking up the South win on Tuesday.
Pitcher Timmy Jones earned his first varsity victory with Ryan Webb and Jaden Snyder both hitting doubles.
Kaden Shockley and Damin Smith both had multiple hits and RBI for the Blue Jays.
Girls’ lacrosse
Polytech 14, Caesar Rodney 13: The Panthers built an 8-4 halftime advantage before picking up the Henlopen North win.
Claire Fuchs led Polytech with six goals and two assists while Molly Kenney (2 goals, 1 assist), Madison Todd (2 goals, 3 assists) and Regan Kenney (2 goals) were all multiple goal-scorers for Polytech.
Brianna Simpson (3 goals, 1 assist), Elise Hensley (3 goals), Rylie Faircloth (2 goals) and Chloe Hughes (2 goals) paced the Riders.
Boys’ lacrosse
Sussex Academy 14, Delmar 7: The Seahawks improved to 5-0 with the South victory.
Episcopal Academy (Pa.) 13, Cape Henlopen 10: Episcopal netted four of the game’s last five goals to top the Vikings on Tuesday.
Gabriel Best (3 goals, 3 assists) and Blake Gipko (3 goals, 1 assist) paced Cape (1-1), which got goals from six different players. Michael Sposato had 11 saves for the Vikings.
College bowling
Hornets receive NCAA bid: The Delaware State bowling squad will be part of the 16-team field vying for the NCAA women’s championship.
The Hornets were one of 10 teams to receive at-large bids to the tournament next weekend (April 7-10) in Kansas City, Mo.
This will be Delaware State’s third NCAA Tournament appearance. The Hornets also competed for the national championship in 2009 and 2010.
The 2009 DSU team advanced to the NCAA Tournament final four before falling to eventual champion Nebraska in the double-elimination tourney. The Hornets entered the 2009 and ‘10 NCAAs as champions of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
Delaware State was ranked 12th in the most recent National Tenpin Coaches Association monthly poll.
College soccer
MEN, Wesley 2, Gynedd-Mercy 1, OT: Justin John-Langba’s overtime goal lifted the Wolverines to the win.
Both teams’ scored their first goals in the opening 20 minutes of the contest, with Lyod Coutilien (Caesar Rodney) tying the game for Wesley (2-2).
College lacrosse
WOMEN, Cabrini 16, Wesley 3: Margaret Johnson, Catherine Bennett and Kassie Dieter all scored goals for the Wolverines (1-3) in the loss.
Katelyn Porter (Smyrna) made 11 saves for Wesley, which was out-shot 38-6.
College volleyball
Three Hornets honored: Delaware State middle blocker Sydney Lewis has been named to this season’s All-MEAC first team in volleyball, while outside hitters Mayah Ngundam and Valeria Otero were selected to the second team.
In addition, Otero was also voted to the MEAC All-Rookie Team, in balloting by league head coaches and sports information representatives.
Lewis, a 2019 MEAC All-Rookie honoree, is the first Hornet named to the All-MEAC first team since Sonja Banicevic in 2010. This season, Lewis is tops in the MEAC in blocks at 1.04 per set and third in the league with .388 hitting percentage (95 kills / 24 errors/ 183 attacks).
Otero is second on the Hornets with 121 digs and has reached double-figures in kills and digs in the same match five times this season. Ngundam is one of two MEAC players to rank in the Top 10 in hitting percentage, kills and blocks this season.
DSU will face North Carolina A&T in the first semifinal of the four-team MEAC Tournament on Friday at 4 p.m. at Norfolk State. The Hornets, making their first tournament appearance since 2010, are the No. 2 North seed, while the Aggies are the No. 1 South seed.
College golf
Hens’ golfer earns honor: Delaware freshman Oihana Etxezarreta has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Golfer of the Week for the second consecutive week following her win at the Kingsmill Intercollegiate.
Etxezarreta posted an 11-shot victory on Monday and Tuesday at the tournament, carding a one under par 75-74-66-215 on the par 72, 6,057-yard River Course at Kingsmill Resort. Her final round 66, the second lowest round in program history, featured six birdies and an eagle on the 18th hole.
