Local roundup: Unbeaten Spartans win 40-8

Lake Forest stayed unbeaten thanks to a 40-8 victory at home over Delcastle on Friday night.

The Spartans led wire-to-wire after back-to-back first quarter touchdowns by Calif Spencer.

Lake Forest improved to 3-0 overall.

Woodbridge 27, Sussex Tech 14: Lextyn Wescott sealed a win for Woodbridge with a 27-yard interception return for a touchdown with 49 seconds left in the Class 2A matchup.

Wescott also returned a fumble for a touchdown earlier in the game. Kenny Newton added a pair of rushing touchdowns for the Blue Raiders.

Sussex Tech was led by Jaryn Sample and Erik Reinacher who had one rushing touchdown apiece. Woodbridge improved to 3-0 overall while Sussex Tech dropped to 0-4.

Field hockey

Delmar 9, Milford 0: Maci Bradford netted four goals while Josie Hollamon recorded three assists.

Jordyn Hollamon added two goals and one assist. Emily Bitters and Baylee Phillips also scored for Delmar (5-0).

The nine-goal advantage was Delmar’s shortest winning margin of the season.

Lake Forest 5, Sussex Central 0: The Spartans earned the road victory Friday to improve to 4-0 overall.

Boys’ soccer

Cape Henlopen 2, Worcester Prep, Md. 1: Aldo Hernandez-Becerra scored a goal and assisted on another to lift the Vikings over an out of state opponent.

Nicholas Panyko also scored for Cape Henlopen (3-2). Goalie Dalson Case recorded three saves.

Volleyball

Lake Forest 3, Laurel 0: The Spartans recorded a Henlopen South win in straight sets 25-9, 25-7, 25-10.

College volleyball

Delaware State 3, Howard 1: The Hornets stretched their winning streak to nine matches, capturing the MEAC opener.

Delaware State improved to 13-1 on the season and 1-0 in the MEAC. Set scores were 26-24, 25-16, 14-25 and 25-19.

Alondra Maldonado paced the Hornets with 15 kills, followed by Valeria Otero’s 14 and Kristi Gomez who had 10. Malgorzata Andersohn provided 27 assists and Jasmal Cruz recorded 20 digs.

Women’s soccer

Delaware State 1, Hampton 0: Mary O’Conner scored on a penalty kick to lift Delaware State to its first win of the season.

Eriona Shabani made two saves for the shutout. The Hornets snapped a seven-game losing streak.
