Local roundup: Shields hurls shutout in Riders’ tourney opener

Peyton Shields threw a six-inning one-hitter with eight strikeouts as seventh-seeded Caesar Rodney High blanked No. 26 St. Georges, 10-0, in the DIAA softball state tournament on Wednesday afternoon.

Lyric Abdul-Rasheed ended the contest with a three-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Riders (16-3), who posted the program’s first state tourney win since 2016, next host No. 10 Sussex Academy on Saturday at a time TBD.

Riley Elledge had three of CR’s 10 hits while Stacey Deputy also added multiple hits.

Emmalee Cole had the lone hit for the Hawks (5-13).

Delmarva Christian 10, Sussex Academy 4: Kandice Schlabach belted three homeruns to power the No. 10 Royals to the state tournament win.

Delmarva Christian (12-5) will face another Henlopen Conference team, No. 7 Caesar Rodney, on Saturday in Camden. The Royals used a four-run second to open up a 5-0 lead as Lilliana Showacre pitched a five-hitter.

The Seahawks finished their season at 8-7.

Seaford 7, William Penn 1: The 19th-seeded Blue Jays (11-7) knocked off the No. 14 Colonials (13-6) on Wednesday.

Seaford will face either Caravel or MOT Charter on Saturday.

Appoquinimink 14, Indian River 8: The 24th-seeded Indians scored five runs in the top of the first but the ninth-seeded Jaguars answered with 13 runs over the next three innings to take control of the state tourney contest.

Madeline Olivas had three hits and three RBI for Appo (14-5), which will travel to Red Lion Christian on Saturday.

Samantha Derickson hit a two-run homer for the Indians (6-12).

Boys’ lacrosse

Cape Henlopen 19, Wilmington Friends 3: The fifth-seeded Vikings netted nine unanswered goals in the first quarter before advancing to the DIAA state quarterfinals.

Jacob Schell scored four goals with Henry D’Ambrogi adding three goals and six assists for Cape (12-4), which faces No. 4 Delaware Military (13-3) on Saturday at a time TBA. Michael Frederick tallied three goals and a pair of assists as nine Vikings scored.

Michael Sposato and Carson Kammerer combined for six saves.

Tower Hill 16, Indian River 2: The seventh-seeded Hillers took a 10-0 halftime advantage before posting the state tourney win.

Tower Hill (10-6) will face second-seeded Salesianum on Saturday while the No. 10 Indians finish the season at 11-5.

Girls’ lacrosse

Cape Henlopen 21, Middletown 1: The second-seeded Vikings cruised to the first-round state tournament victory.

The Vikings (14-1) will host either Dover or Sussex Academy in Saturday’s second round.

Haley Craig (2 assists), Riley Keen (3 assists), Ella Rishko and Emily Monigle (2 assists) all netted three goals for Cape, which out-shot the Cavaiers, 24-1.

Tatnall 22, Sussex Tech 7: The top-seeded Hornets (16-0) rolled to the tourney win over the 16th-seeded Ravens (7-8).

College baseball

Hornets open MEAC tourney: Delaware State will face MEAC Southern Division regular-season champ North Carolina Central in the opening game of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament today at noon at Marty Miller Field in Norfolk, Va.

The Hornets are the No. 2 Northern Division seed in the four-team tournament.

Only the top two teams in each MEAC division are competing in the double-elimination tourney. The champion earns the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Division I Tournament.

MEAC North regular-season champ Norfolk State will square off against No. 2 South seed Florida A&M in the other opening-round contest on today at 3:30 p.m.

Delaware State and North Carolina Central played eight times during the regular season, with the Eagles holding a 5-3 lead.

The Hornets are seeking their first MEAC Tournament championship since 1989, while North Carolina Central is aiming for its first title.
