Local roundup: M.O.T. downs C-W Gold in Deak Deakins finals

M.O.T. downed Camden-Wyoming/Gold, 12-2, in the finals of the Deak Deakins tournament in District I Little League baseball on Monday night.

The Middletown-based squad went 3-0 in the eight-team tourney played in Felton.

Camden-Wyoming/Gold finished 2-1 in the tournament.

Walt Bowers tournament

M.O.T. 8, Smyrna-Clayton 0: The Middletown-area squad won the tourney title with the win on Sunday.

M.O.T. led only 1-0 before scoring seven runs in the fifth inning.

Winning pitcher Gavin Thomas allowed only one hit and struck out 12. Thomas and Cooper Housey both went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI while reliever Andrew Gambino struck out the side in the sixth.

Eyeko Gawuah made several big defensive plays at shortstop for Smyrna-Clayton.

Pat Knight tournament

Camden-Wyoming 13, Smyrna-Clayton 3: Camden-Wyoming advanced to the tourney finals with the win on Monday.

M.O.T. and Camden-Wyoming will play in the title game today at 6 p.m. at Smyrna-Clayton.

Tabor Johnson, Lucas Carter and Colin Yoder all pitched for Camden-Wyoming in Monday’s victory while Colin Yoder and Milo Massuli both doubled.

Smyrna-Clayton got hits from Parker Wallace and Cam Miller.

SOFTBALL

7-9 tournament

Smyrna-Clayton 8, M.O.T. 4: Smyrna-Clayton won the tourney title with the win on Monday night in Felton.

Emelia Short had two hits while Bailey Sacco and Charlotte Everett both tripled and all three players scored twice for Smyrna-Clayton, which went 2-0 in the tournament.

Kaylee Marshall had a triple with two RBI for M.O.T.

College triathlon

DSU adds seventh recruit: Cassidy Van Wagenen of Havelock, N.C. is the seventh athlete signed by coach Eric Kirouac for the Delaware State women’s triathlon program.

Van Wagenen’s achievements include runner-up in the North Carolina 3A Coastal Conference 100-meter free, and a third place finish in the conference 100-meter breast.

In addition, she’s earned a FFA Greenhand Degree, FFA Chapter Degree and North Carolina FFA State Degree, along with the Reserve officer Association JROTC award and American Legion Scholastic Excellence medal

She’s also served as Commanding officer of the Havelock High School NJROTC unit, Vice president of the Havelock High School FFA chapter and Secretary of Havelock’s NTHS.
