Local roundup: M.O.T. captures District I Senior League softball crown

M.O.T. posted a 19-3 victory over Smyrna-Clayton to take the District I title in Senior League softball on Sunday night.

The Middletown-area squad finished 3-1 in the double-elimination tournament, bouncing back from a one-run loss to Smyrna-Clayton on Saturday night.

M.O.T. will return to Smyrna-Clayton for the three-team state tournament. District III champion Lower Sussex faces the District II champion on July 17 with M.O.T. taking on the winner on July 18.

Smyrna-Clayton ended up with a record of 3-2 in the District I tourney.

Smyrna-Clayton 18, M.O.T. 17: Smyrna-Clayton rallied for the walk-off win to force a second title game on Saturday night.

Pacing Smyrna-Clayton was Lexi Steele (3-for-5, double, 2 RBI, 3 runs), Addie Whitaker (2-for-5, 2 doubles, 2 RBI) and Jordan Fletcher (2-for-3, homer, 2 RBI, 2 runs). Hailey Ennis and Delaney Smith both pitched.

For M.O.T., Aubrey Demond went 3-for-3, with a double, four runs and an RBI, Kira Brown had a double and scored twice and Ava McCormick pitched.

Major League

State Tournament

M.O.T. 10, Canal 1: M.O.T. advanced to the Major League state finals with the victory on Sunday night.

M.O.T. (2-1) plays host Lower Sussex (1-0) today at 7 p.m. needing a win to force a second championship game on Tuesday.

The state champion earns a berth in the Eastern Regional in Bristol, Conn.
