Local Roundup: Lower Sussex advances to state finals in Sr. League

Lower Sussex downed Dover, 15-4, to advance to the state finals in Senior League baseball on Monday evening.

The District III champions take on Naamans (1-0) today at 7 p.m. at M.O.T.

Lower Sussex (1-1) needs a victory to force a second game for the title on Wednesday night. The state champion earns a berth in the Eastern Regional, being played in Thorofare, N.J.

District I champion Dover finished 0-2 in the state tourney.

Major League

M.O.T. 13, Smyrna-Clayton 2: The Middletown-area squad opened the District I Tournament with a win on Monday.

M.O.T. takes on host Dover today at 8:30 p.m.

Jimmy Breen went 2-for-4 with five RBI for M.O.T. while Brandon Sullivan was 4-for-4 and drove in a run. Also leading the way were winning pitcher Eliah Hunt (2-for-2, home run, 3 RBI) and Zach Sophy (3-for-3, 2 RBI).

Joe Scott had a triple with an RBI for Smyrna-Clayton, which plays again on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m.

8-10 tournament

M.O.T. 11, Felton-Harrington 6: Pitcher Ian Keane (2 runs), Brayden Redmond and Mike Viondolillio (1 run) all had two hits to pace M.O.T. to the victory.

M.O.T. takes on Smyrna-Clayton today at 8:30 p.m. in the double-elimination, six-team District I Tournament.

Felton-Harrington next plays on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m.

Major League

Lower Sussex 2, Camden-Wyoming 1: The District III champions edged Camden-Wyoming in the first game of the state tournament on Monday.

Lower Sussex faces District II today at 7 p.m. at Canal with Camden-Wyoming taking on the loser in an elimination contest on Wednesday night.

Lauren Dickerson pitched all six innings for Camden-Wyoming with Emma Ford and Peyton Shields contributing two hits apiece.

8-10 tournament

M.O.T. 11, Smyrna-Clayton 1: The win on Monday puts M.O.T. in the District I finals.

M.O.T. takes on host Camden-Wyoming today at 7 p.m. needing a victory to force a second game on Wednesday for the district title.

Camden-Wyoming topped M.O.T., 6-5, on Sunday. The district champion advances to the state tournament, which starts on July 19 at Canal.

American Legion

Fox Post splits two: Fox Post rebounded to win the nightcap, 8-7, and earn a split with R.C. DuPont at Brandywine High on Sunday.

R.C. DuPont took the opener, 10-5. Fox Post has won five of its last seven games to improve to 9-6.

Canal Post 25 Middletown 4, Stahl Post 3: Kyle Schneider’s two-run single sparked a four-run fifth as Canal pulled out the victory on Monday night.

Special Olympics

Try-It Day scheduled: Delaware Special Olympics will hold a Try-It Day on July 26, from 4-7 p.m. at the DE Turf Sports Complex in Frederica.

The event is open to any new athletes and athletes already participating in Special Olympics school programs, or other agencies who are interested in learning more about the area programs.

Athletes will have an opportunity to try sports while parents attend a short information session. There is no fee but registration is required. For more information and to register visit www.sode.org.
