Local roundup: Lake Forest knocks off Royals in tourney

Lake Forest High scored twice in the third inning before going on to a 3-1 victory over No. 13 Delmarva Christian in the DIAA baseball state tournament on Thursday.

The tourney win was the first for the No. 20 Spartans since before 2009. Lake hadn’t even made the state tournament in that stretch.

Lake Forest (11-8) will take on No. 4 Tower Hill in Saturday’s third round of the tournament.

The Spartans’ John Mudri pitched a complete-game six-hitter, throwing 100 pitches, to earn the win. Leighton Webb drove in a first-inning run.

Tommy Obertubbesing and Chase Hesson (1 RBI) each had two hits for the Royals (13-5), who beat Lake Forest, 3-0, on May 8.

Smyrna 5, Delmar 3: The No. 22 Eagles used a three-run sixth to break a 2-2 tie as they knocked off the No. 11 Wildcats.

Mason Drummond, Dalton Leager and Derek Davis all hit doubles in the inning for Smyrna (11-9). Drummond was also the winning pitcher, scattering six hits and striking out six over six innings.

Cape Henlopen 12, Sanford 0: Nick Cox hit a three-run homer and Justin March added a two-run shot for the ninth-seeded Vikings.

Cape (14-5), which goes to No. 8 Salesianum on Saturday, was also led by Hunter Rauch was (2-for-3, 3 RBI), Austin Rhue (2-for-2, 2 RBI) and Mason Kosc (2 hits). Three Viking pitchers combined on a one-hitter with nine strikeouts.

Indian River 18, Archmere 11: The 19th-seeded Indians scored their second-highest run total of the season in toppling the No. 14 Auks (12-6).

IR (11-8) will play at No. 3 St. Mark’s on Saturday.

Sussex Tech 16, Brandywine 3: The second-seeded Ravens erupted for 13 runs in the fourth to close out the win.

Jaryn Sample and Jason Shockley both homered to highlight a 17-hit attack for Sussex Tech, which hosts Middletown on Saturday.

Delaware Military 8, Sussex Academy 1: Brayden Tidwell, Chet Mariner, and Patrick Donahue all had hits for the Seahawks.

Appoquinimink 12, Caesar Rodney 3: The No. 23 Riders scored three runs in the top of the second before the No. 10 Jaguars reeled off the game’s final 12 runs.

Appo (14-5) out-hit CR (11-9) by a margin of 14-4.

Caravel 12, Milford 2: No. 17 Caravel led only 3-1 before scoring seven runs in the fourth to put away No. 16 Milford.

Milford’s Mason Morris had two hits with Ryan Zimmerman adding a hit and a pair of RBI.

Conrad 13, Polytech 2: The Panthers scored twice in the top of the first but the No. 7 Red Wolves answered with eight in the second.

Softball

Smyrna 20, St. Elizabeth 0: Payton Dixon and Carly Maxton combined to pitch a five-inning no-hitter in the Eagles’ tournament win.

Fifth-seeded Smyrna (13-7), which has won nine straight tournament games, will host No. 21 Newark Charter (11-8) on Saturday.

The Eagles had 17 hits in the contest as Dixon — who homered — Sydney Eihinger, and Makayla Brantley had RBI apiece. Sheridan Price and Meghan Shirey both scored three runs.

Middletown 8, Dover 1: Lydia Drake threw a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts for the No. 11 Cavaliers.

Chelsea Johnson and Jamie Chandler had a hit each for Dover.

Sussex Central 7, Milford 3: Kate Evick doubled twice to spark the top-seeded Knights (18-1) downed the No. 33 Buccaneers (3-17).
Central will host No. 16 Padua on Saturday.

Lake Forest 5, Delmar 1: The No. 18 Spartans scored three runs in the sixth to take control of a 2-1 game.

Lake Forest (11-7) next plays at second-seeded DMA on Saturday.

Sussex Tech 10, Mt. Pleasant 4: Laniya Lewis (2 RBI) homered for the No. 6 Ravens (13-5), who broke open the contest with five runs in the fifth.

Victoria Lecates (2 hits, 4 RBI), Megan Sterling (3 hits). Kylie Kruger (2 hits) and Jaya Shaub (2 hits) also paced Sussex Tech, which hosts Middletown on Saturday.

Laurel 7, Archmere 0: The fourth-seeded Bulldogs will host No. 13 St. Mark’s after the win.

Padua 13, Cape Henlopen 3: The No. 17 Vikings led 3-0 before the No. 16 Pandas took the lead for good with five runs in the third.

Taylor Husbands (2-for-3) had a two-run double for Cape.

Delaware Military 9, Polytech 0: Grace Frost pitched a perfect game while striking out all 21 batters she faced for the No. 2 Seahawks (16-2), who host Lake Forest on Saturday.

Girls’ lacrosse

Sussex Academy 12, Dover 11: The No. 7 Seahawks avenged a regular-season loss to the No. 10 Senators.

Sussex Academy (13-3), which will play at No. 2 Cape Henlopen in Saturday’s quarterfinals, got six goals from Annabella Guckes and three from Sanne Elling. Peyton Hagy made eight saves as the Seahawks out-shot Dover, 24-20.

Superia Clark netted six goals for the Senators with Ashtyn Torbert scoring three. Regan Torbert made five saves.

Tower Hill 21, Polytech 11: The sixth-seeded Hillers jumped out to a 15-5 halftime lead before downing the No. 11 Panthers (9-7) in the first-round tourney game.

Boys’ lacrosse

Smyrna 8, Sussex Academy 7: The ninth-seeded Eagles took a three-goal lead in the fourth quarter and then held off the No. 8 Seahawks in the first round of the DIAA state tournament on Wednesday night.

Sussex Academy netted the game’s final two goals and missed a shot with one second left.

The Eagles (11-5) play at top-seeded Sanford on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in the tourney’s second round.

Jason Zeitler (1 assist) and Chase McLaughlin both tallied three goals for Smyrna with Zarek Kolakowski adding the other two.

John Williams made 14 saves for the Eagles as the Seahawks finished with a 30-22 edge in shots.

Jackson Dinger scored four goals for Sussex Academy (14-2).

Girls’ soccer

Sussex Academy 4, Brandywine 1: In a DIAA Division II state tournament game played Wednesday, the ninth-seeded Seahawks knocked off the No. 8 Bulldogs.

Sussex Academy (10-6) travels to face top-seeded Caravel (12-1) on Saturday at 2 p.m.

College baseball

North Carolina Central 9, Delaware State 4: The Hornets erased an early three-run deficit, but never led in the opening game of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament.

Delaware State will face the loser of the Florida A&M/Norfolk State contest on Friday at 3:30 p.m. in the elimination round.

John Weglarz was 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Miguel Rivera (Polytech) had three hits and an RBI in five at-bats to lead Delaware State’s 12-hit attack.

Local football

Adult team looking for players, coaches: The Thunder Wolves Football Club is for players, assistant coaches and sponsors for the upcoming season.

The team is going to hold a workout on June 12 at the Camden-Wyoming Little League Complex from 10 a.m-noon.

The Thunder Wolves will be playing in the Xtreme East Football League, which begins is season on Aug. 21. Preseason practices will be on Tuesday and Thursday evenings as well as Saturday mornings.

Potential players need to be at least 18 and finished with their high school eligibility.
