Local roundup: Knights defeat Spartans in volleyball state tournament

Bre Reid collected 29 kills and six aces as 11th-seeded Sussex Central downed No. 22 Lake Forest, 3-0, in the first round of the DIAA volleyball state tournament on Thursday evening.

The Golden Knights (13-3) won the matchup of Henlopen Conference teams by scores of 25-15, 25-23, 25-19 in what is believed to be the program’s first state tourney win.

Central, which is making its fourth straight state tournament appearance, moves on to a second-round date at sixth-seeded Wilmington Friends (13-2) at 6:30 p.m.

Also leading the Knights were Madelynn McTeer (31 assists) and Katelyn Evick (8 kills, 1 ace).

Henlopen South champion Lake Forest finishes the season at 9-8.

Football

Seaford 31, Odessa 0: The Blue Jays blanked the Ducks on Thursday night to improve to 4-2 in Class 1A, District II, 6-2 overall.

It was Seaford’s first shutout since the first game of the 2017 season. The Jays finish the regular season by hosting Dickinson next Friday night.

Boys’ soccer

Dover 3, Christiana 1: The Senators closed the regular season with a record 8-6-1 after posting the non-conference win.

The brackets for the DIAA Division I and II state tournaments will be determined on Friday.

Indian River 2, Sussex Central 1: The Indians scored on an own goal in overtime to edge the Golden Knights.

IR tied the game on a goal in the 69th minute. Central out-shot the Indians, 13-12, while IR held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

The South champion Indians take on North champion Caesar Rodney in the Henlopen Conference championship game on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Sussex Academy.

Woodbridge 2, Delmarva Christian 0: The Blue Raiders (9-6) netted a pair of second-half goals in the victory.

Sussex Academy 2, Delmar 0: The win for the Seahawks (8-7) left both teams 4-2 in the Henlopen South.

Dickinson 4, Smyrna 2: Ayomide Gbadebo and Angel Salguero tallied second-half goals for the Eagles’ season-ending loss.

Joseph Scott made nine saves.

Field hockey

Cape Henlopen 10, Milford 0: The Vikings finished 7-0 in the Henlopen North with the win.

It was the ninth shutout of the season for Cape Henlopen (14-1 overall) and the sixth time it has scored in double digits.

The Vikings face South champion Delmar in the Henlopen Conference championship game on Saturday. The contest is slated for 2 p.m. at Sussex Academy.

Woodbridge 11, Delmarva Christian 0: The Blue Raiders (7-8) finished the regular season with their fifth shutout.

College field hockey

Eight Hens honored by CAA: The Delaware field hockey team earned eight Colonial Athletic Association postseason awards on Thursday.

Sophomore Julia Duffhuis was tabbed Defensive Player of the Year and earned a spot on the All-CAA first team. The Bergeijk, She ranks second in the conference in goals (13) and goals per game (0.72).

Junior Ashlyn Carr (Delmar) was named to the All-CAA first team for the second time in her career. She leads the conference with 11 assists and is tied for ninth with 17 points.

Fifth-year senior Femke Strien earned her third career All-CAA first-team honor, adding to her long list of accolades.

Strien is tied for fifth in the league with 20 points.

Senior Grace Miller earned a spot on the All-CAA second team while freshmen Sian Emslie and Genevieve Johnson earned spots on the CAA All-Rookie Team.
