Delaware State scored 43 runs on 40 hits in a 32-11, 11-5 baseball sweep of Mount St. Mary’s on Sunday afternoon.
The Hornets (2-5) scored in all seven innings of the opener, capping it off with eight runs in the sixth and 10 runs in the seventh. Miguel Rivera (Polytech) and John Weglarz each contributed five hits to DSU’s total of 28 in the contest.
Eleven Hornets had at least one hit in the opener while Mason Brewer and Mark Herron had four RBI each. Tripp Kimmell (Milford) scored five runs, had four hits and three RBI.
The Hornets used a seven-run sixth to break open the nightcap. Weglarz had four more hits to give him nine hits in the twinbill.
Villanova 11, Delaware 10: The Blue Hens (2-2) rallied for four runs in the seventh before falling short.
Joey Loynd went 2-for-3 with two runs and Mitchell Balint collected a pair of hits with an RBI. Freshman Dom Velazquez (Dover) made his second start and lasted four innings with seven strikeouts, allowing earned six earned runs.
The duo of junior Jordan Hutchins (Dover) and sophomore Joseph Carpenter started its 73rd straight game together. Hutchins, who had a two-run double, has reached base in nine straight games and 14 of his last 15.
Cabrini sweeps Wolverines: Cabrini took two from Wesley on Sunday, winning by scores of 13-0 and 11-8.
In the nightcap, the Wolverines scored five runs in the fourth, including two on a double by Dustin Sutton. But Cabrini rallied for seven runs in the sixth.
Softball
Hens sweep Albany: Emily Winburn fired a three-hit shutout in the opener before the Blue Hens pounded out 11 hits in the nightcap as Delaware remained unbeaten with a 2-0, 10-4 sweep of Albany.
The Hens (5-0) took the lead in the bottom of the first of the opener, as Lexi Moore (Smyrna) led off with a walk and eventually scored on a two-out single up the middle by Brooke Glanden (Lake Forest).
Glanden then gave Delaware an insurance run in the fifth when she tripled to leftfield to drive home Hanna Garber.
Glanden finished the day with four hits and four RBI, while Chayanna Gallardo added three hits and drove home three.
Men’s soccer
Delaware 1, Northeastern 0: Brandon Sengphachanh headed home a Ryan Mertz corner kick 1:50 into the second overtime period as the Blue Hens (2-0) won their season opener.
Mertz served in a corner kick from the left corner to the middle of the box, where Sengphachanh delivered a perfect header from 12 yards out into the top of the net to set off the Blue Hen celebration.
Women’s soccer
Northeastern 2, Delaware 0: Junior goalkeeper Lauren Krinsky made six saves as the Blue Hens (2-1) dropped their CAA opener.
On Saturday, Delaware hosts No. 2 North Carolina at 1 p.m. The 21-time NCAA Champion Tar Heels are the highest-ranked opponent ever for the Blue Hens, and the first ACC team to play in Newark since 1992.
Volleyball
Northeastern 3, Delaware 0: The Blue Hens had to s settle for a weekend split with the Huskies after dropping with a split this weekend after dropping a 23-25, 15-25, 16-25 decision on Sunday.
Freshman Savannah Seemans led the way with seven kills, 11 digs and three blocks while sophomore Lauryn Richardson added six kills and a pair of blocks.
Field hockey
St. Joseph’s 3, Delaware 2: The Hawks scored in overtime to edge the Blue Hens in their spring season opener.
Wesley 1, Immaculata 0: The Wolverines scored in overtime to earn the victory.
