Jade Edwards’ goal in the first minute of the game held up as Smyrna High blanked Cape Henlopen, 1-0, in girls’ soccer on Wednesday evening.

The contest was the first Henlopen Conference Northern Division contest of the season for both teams.

Casey Bell assisted on the goal while Samantha Sawyer made four saves to earn the shutout. Smyrna outshot Cape, 11-5, while the Vikings held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Vikings’ Olivia Baratto stopped 10 shots.

Sussex Central 4, Laurel 0: In a game played on Tuesday, the Golden Knights recorded a shutout against the Bulldogs.

Boys’ lacrosse

Sussex Tech 12, Smyrna 6: Trailing by two, the Ravens outscored the Eagles, 8-1, in the third quarter to take control of the Henlopen North game.

Nathaniel Quillen had three goals and an assist for Sussex Tech while Ian Carlisle, Jason Whaley, Matthew Tull and Caleb Dennis all scored twice. Tyler Hatfield also scored a goal.

Wesley Ogden netted a pair of goals for Smyrna which also got one goal each from Jake Kaiser, Jason Kaiser, Jacob Soroko and Jonathan Guzman. The Ravens outshot the Eagles, 27-23.

Cape Henlopen 11, Dover 3: The Vikings outscored the Senators, 7-1, in the second half to pull away to the Henlopen North victory.

Delmar 10, Cambridge-South Dorchester, Md. 9: The Wildcats outscored Cambridge 5-1 in the fourth quarter to tie the contest before winning the game in overtime.

Andrew Blewitt had four goals and a pair of assists for Delmar while Nicholas Smith added three goals. Jeremy Haynes scored twice with Masyn Lilly netting the other goal.

Goalie Hunter Gilmore made 13 saves.

Caesar Rodney 10, Wilmington Charter 1: The Riders picked up a win in their first game of the season on Tuesday afternoon.

Girls’ lacrosse

Polytech 19, Indian River 6: Allie McKay and Maddie McKay tallied five goals apiece to lead the Panthers to the seasons-opening victory.

Jamie Trabaudo added four goals and two assists with Kate Richardson scoring twice. Camryn Dennis, Morgan Cook and Naomi Valmassoi added a goal each.

Shannon Stephan made four saves as Polytech outshot IR, 30-10.

Emiley Shuey scored three goals for the Indians, Kealey Allison had two with Alexis Haden scoring one.

Cape Henlopen 19, Dover 2: Lizzie Frederick netted four goals and four assists to pace the Vikings to the season-opening win.

Cape was also led by Tess Bernheimer (3 goals), Chloe Schaeffer (3 goals), Eddy Shoop (2 goals), Cailey Thornburg (2 goals, 1 assist), Katie Frederick (2 goals, 1 assist), Mallory Jones (1 goal), Lindsay Monigle (1 goal) and Alia Marshall (1 goal).

The Vikings outshot the Senators, 35-7.

Grace Gast and Cydney Barnes had Dover’s goals with Catherine Schoepp making eight saves.

St. Thomas More 8, Mount Pleasant 7: Joanna Petrosky’s five goals helped the Ravens earn a nonconference victory in their season opener, played on Tuesday.

Gillian Crawford, Jessica Simmons and Sophia Stafford added goals for St. Thomas More.

College baseball

La Salle 6, Delaware State 5: The Explorers rallied for four runs in the seventh to top the Hornets.

The La Salle bullpen hurled 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing just two DSU baserunners. The Hornets scored five runs over the first two innings to take a 5-0 lead.

Penn State-Harrisburg 4, Wesley 1: The Wolverines (3-4 CAC, 9-10 overall) dropped the Capital Athletic Conference decision on Wednesday.

KeAndre Jones went 4-for-5 with a stolen base and Ron Morello went 3-for-3 while Chris Seibert drove in the Wolverines’ only run, scored by Eric Speidel.

Cody Simet began the game by retiring 10 straight batters but allowed three earned runs in seven innings to take the loss. Eric Willey (Woodbridge) allowed one run in the eighth and Sam Meck tossed a scoreless, hitless ninth frame.

College softball

UD earns split: Kiersten Coffman fired a three-hit shutout in the nightcap as Delaware split a doubleheader with Monmouth, losing the opener, 3-1, before winning the second game, 1-0.

Coffman (9-4) recorded her first shutout of the season after allowing just three hits and no walks while striking out seven. Delaware (14-10) scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth as Alyshia Dellatore ripped a two-out single to left and scored when Leanna Gearhart reached on an error.

College lacrosse

MEN, Wesley 17, Keystone 7: Wesley had 11 different players register a point as it rolled to the victory.

John Chenault had three goals for the Wolverines (4-6) while Nate Gemmato and Sam Seibert each recorded two goals and two assists. Hunter Coho netted a pair of goals and dished off an assist.

Will Fingles, Zach Farnell, and Jack Redefer each finished with two points. Goalie Cody Ireland made 12 saves and also scooped up a pair of ground balls.

College athletics

UD’s Hitchens makes ‘Hall’: Milford native Mary Ann Hitchens, a University of Delaware athletics icon and a pioneer nationally in the field of women’s athletics, has earned induction into another Hall of Fame.

Hitchens is among 15 men and women who will honored in the second Eastern College Athletic Conference Hall of Fame induction class.

The class will be inducted on April 15, 2016 at the ECAC Hall of Fame Gala and Induction Ceremony to be held at the Matrix Conference & Banquet Center in Danbury, Conn.

Hitchens served at the University of Delaware as an athletics administrator and head coach of the women’s basketball and field hockey teams during a span that covered nearly 40 years,

“I am very honored to have been selected for the ECAC Hall of Fame Class of 2016,” said Hitchens, who resides in Landenberg, Pa. “It is a most unexpected and truly humbling experience to join the inductees in this, as well as the inaugural class of 2015, who have made such significant and far-reaching contributions to collegiate athletics in our region over the course of their illustrious careers.”

College bowling

Four Hornets named All-MEAC: Delaware State’s Chelsey Merklinger has been selected to the All-MEAC Bowling first team.

Merklinger is tops on the Hornets and among the MEAC leaders with a 203.1 per game average. She had a four-game average of 239.5, highlighted by a career-best 278.

A 2014-15 All-MEAC second-team selection, Merklinger averaged 226.8 in five games at the Kutztown Invitational and 207.5 in six games at the USBC Regional Championships this season.

Delaware State’s Elizabeth Burkholder, Stephanie Sheridan and Amber MacLeod were selected to the All-MEAC third team.

College field hockey

Wolverines honored for academics: The Wesley College field hockey team was honored with the ZAG Field Hockey/NFHCA National Academic team award while nine players were named to the National Academic Squad and two were named Scholars of Distinction.

The award recognizes schools that achieved a team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the first semester of the 2015-16 academic year.

The National Academic Squad recognizes players who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester. Wesley’s Kelsey Fromal, Kasey Fry, Meghan Groom, Katelyn Harding, Maggie Matthews, Allison Perugini, Renee Schneider, Morgan Seymour, and Taylor Timmons all earned the award.
