Mason Drummond went 4-for-5 with three doubles as No. 22 Smyrna High knocked off No. 6 Sussex Central, 13-7, in the DIAA baseball state tournament on Saturday afternoon.
Smyrna (12-9), which has won three straight tourney games, advances to play at No. 3 seed St. Mark’s on Tuesday at a time to be announced. The Eagles lost to the Spartans, 2-1, in 10 innings on April 24.
In Saturday’s win, Smyrna scored three runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh to open up a 13-2 lead. The Eagles then held off the Golden Knights when they rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Smyrna avenged a 5-2 defeat to Sussex Central (15-5) in the season opener.
Shawn Mannering held Sussex Central to two runs in the first six innings. Connor Strauss doubled and tripled for the Eagles while Connor Wilson and Jacob Macey each had multi-hit games.
Brenden Anderson, Chase Boyle, Cole Jester, Troy Morris and Jaxon Steen all doubled for Sussex Central.
Sussex Tech 5, Middletown 0: Cody Dimes and Jason Shockley each drove in two runs as the Ravens earned a quarterfinal berth.
Dimes pitched into the seventh inning, striking out nine. Jonathan Stokley went 3-for-3 and Conor Ellingsworth had a pair of hits.
Sussex Tech, seeded second in the tournament, will host the 10th seed, Appoquinimink, on Tuesday.
Delaware Military Academy 9, Dover 2: The Seahawks used a four-run first inning to take control and reach the quarterfinals.
Leondre Brittingham homered to lead the Senators, who finished their season at 11-10 overall. Alec Rodriguez and Hunter Chambers added doubles for Dover.
Kevin Williams and Zack Morris both had a home run for DMA. The Seahawks will play Tower Hill on Tuesday.
St. Mark’s 2, Indian River 1: Garrett Quinn hit a walkoff single for the Spartans after Dan Keane tripled with one out in the seventh inning.
Derek Bellamere and Ben Cordrey had multiple hits for Henlopen Conference champion Indian River. Kyle Coffey went the distance for Indian River on the mound, holding St. Mark’s to seven hits.
Tower Hill 9, Lake Forest 5: The Spartans out-hit the Hillers, 12-4, but Tower Hill scored seven runs in the fourth to pull ahead for the win,
Gabe Martin went 4-for-5 for Lake Forest while Adam Schiff recorded a pair of hits and tripled. Chase Killen, Tristan McRay and Leighton Webb also had two-hit games for the Spartans.
Softball
Smyrna 1, Newark Charter 0: MaKayla Brantley had a pair hits and scored the winning run off a sacrifice bunt by Meghan Shirey in the bottom of the ninth.
Payton Dixon scattered two hits and struck out 16 in the shutout. Smyrna, seeded fifth, will play at No. 4 Laurel in the quarterfinals on Tuesday T 4 p.m.
Laurel 5, St. Mark’s 0: The Bulldogs reached the quarterfinals thanks to a shutout by Kylee Hill.
Caesar Rodney 3, Delmarva Christian 2: The Riders scored three runs in the first two innings and held on to advance to the quarterfinals.
Stacey Deputy, Kaitlyn Horton, Peyton Shields and Riley Elledge each picked up a hit for CR. Shields struck out eight for the No. 7 seed Riders, who will travel to second-seed Delaware Military for a 4 p.m. matchup in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Lilliana Showacre struck out 11 for Delmarva Christian and Lydia Woods went 2-for-3.
Sussex Central 10, Padua 0: The tournament’s top seed advanced thanks to a five-inning no-hitter by Madge Layfield, who struck out 10.
Aryanna Briddell hit a home run to lead the Golden Knight offense. Sussex Central will host Appoquinimink at 4 p.m. in Tuesday’s quarterfinal.
Caravel 10, Seaford 0: The Blue Jays were held to one hit, by Lillie Larimore, as the Buccaneers earned a berth in the quarterfinals.
Middletown 17, Sussex Tech 12: The Cavaliers scored 11 runs in the second inning, led by Reese Founds who had four hits, scored four runs and hit two home runs in the contest.
Laniya Lewis had three hits, scored three runs and hit a pair of home runs to lead Sussex Tech. Kylie Kruger and Brynn Parker also hit homers for the Ravens.
The game featured 12 extra-base hits, including nine homers. Sussex Tech trailed 14-0 in the top of the third before out-scoring the Cavs, 12-3, the rest of the way.
Lacrosse
GIRLS, Cape Henlopen 17, Sussex Academy 7: Lindsey Monigle scored four goals and Elizabeth Rishko had a hat trick as the Vikings made the semifinals.
Louise Rishko and Riley Keen added two goals apiece for Cape Henlopen, which will face Ursuline in the semifinals on Tuesday. The Vikings beat the Raiders only 11-10 during the regular season.
Madison Leeper scored twice for the Seahawks (13-4).
BOYS, Archmere 18, Caesar Rodney 6: Hunter Christenson and Ryan Carey each netted two goals for the Riders, who fell in the quarterfinals to end their season at 12-5 overall.
Sanford 18, Smyrna 3: The Eagles fell to the top-seeded Warriors in the quarterfinals Saturday.
Girls’ soccer
Indian River 4, Ursuline 1: The fourth-seeded Indians advanced to the Division II semifinals with the win. They will play at top-seeded Caravel on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Caravel 2, Sussex Academy 1: The Seahawks fell by just a goal to the top-seeded Buccaneers in the Division II quarterfinals.
Appoquinimink 5, Polytech 0: The Panthers fell to Appoqunimink in a quarterfinal game played on Friday night, ending their season at 10-6.
