Local Roundup: Dover girls can't get past Caravel

India Johnston tallied 28 points as Caravel Academy rolled to a 69-31 victory over Dover in a nonconference girls’ basketball game on Saturday afternoon.

The Buccaneers built a 37-21 halftime advantage before improving to 6-4. Caravel is 5-0 against Delaware schools.

Jasiyah Crawford added 12 points for the Bucs with Laila Glover contributing six points and 12 rebounds.

The Senators, who fell to 3-2, were playing their first game since Dec. 14.

Tower Hill 53, First State Military 9: Eleven different players scored for the Hillers in the nonconference win.

Boys’ basketball

Middletown 55, Seaford 52: Amir Cunningham sank a pair of foul shots with 30.3 seconds left to give the Cavaliers the lead for good before they held on for the victory.

Trailing by one, the Blue Jays missed a shot in the paint with 18 seconds remaining and then a pair of foul shots with 5.6 seconds on the clock. Middletown missed four free throws in the last 12 seconds but Daren Pope scored on a putback just before the final buzzer to give the Cavs their final points.

For Middletown (5-2), the win was its fifth in a row after starting the season 0-2.

Brent Ricketts, who went 13-of-18 from the foul line, finished with a game-high 24 points for Seaford (2-2) while Careen Bolden added 12. Both players sank three three-pointers.

Ty’renne Hynson tallied 22 points for the Cavaliers with Jadan Rogers scoring 16. Middletown went 11-of-28 from the foul line.

Indian River 54, Lake Forest 46: The Indians finished the game on a 16-8 run to pull out the Henlopen South win on Saturday.

Andrew Burns netted 22 points for IR while Brendan Bradford had 14. Both players hit three three-pointers apiece.

Jackson Starkey, who made four threes, led the Spartans with 20 points. Amir Cooper added 11 for Lake Forest, which outscored the Indians, 17-11, in the third quarter to tie the game at 38-38.

Lake Forest 64, Early College 47: Jackson Starkey netted 22 points, including three three-pointers, to pace the Spartans to the Henlopen South victory on Friday.

James Sims added 10 points as nine Lake Forest players scored in the contest. The Spartans opened up an 18-5 advantage after the first quarter.

Khalil Kemp finished with a game-high 23 points for the Hornets (1-1) while Winston Arrington added 11. Kemp sank four of Early College’s seven three-pointers.

Wrestling

CR wins Va. tourney: Caesar Rodney captured the team title at the 18-team Joe Verciglio Tournament in Chantilly, Virginia on Saturday.

The Riders finished with 512 points to outdistance second-place Skyline, which had 486.

Individually, CR took a pair of championships. Junior Alexander McEvoy won at 106 pounds with a 6-3 decision in the finals while senior Josh Dyer won at 220 with a pin in 5:48.

The Riders had five other wrestlers place in the top three.

College football

North Dakota St. adds another FCS title: North Dakota State defeated Montana State, 38-10, to win the NCAA FCS Division I national championship on Saturday afternoon.

The victory gives the Bison (14-1) their ninth title in 11 seasons in the division that includes Delaware and Delaware State.

The win ties North Dakota State’s largest title game margin of victory. The Bison are now 9-0 in FCS championship games.

North Dakota State dominated the game with its rushing attack, jumping out to a 28-0 first-half lead. Fullback Hunter Luepke, the Most Outstanding Player, ran for three touchdowns in the first two quarters as the Bison gained 268 rushing yards.

On the other side, Montana State (12-3) lost its starting quarterback Tommy Mellott to a right ankle injury on the first drive. The Bobcat offense struggled without its freshman phenom, falling behind 35-0.
