Jasmine Dickey netted 31 points — her third straight 30-point game — as Delaware cruised to a 73-57 win over Charlotte in a non-conference women’s basketball matchup at the Carpenter Center on Sunday afternoon.
Leading only 38-35 midway through the third quarter, the Blue Hens (4-1) went on a 14-0 run, capped by Ty Skinner’s three-point play, to extend the lead to 52-35.
Delaware maintained the double-digit lead for the remainder of the final quarter, including seeing Dickey drain a jumper to give the Hens their biggest advantage at 67-47 with 1:10 remaining.
Skinner added 16 points, with five assists and five rebounds. Ty Battle posted her fourth consecutive double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds while Makayla Pippin pulled down a career-best 16 rebounds in her first-career start for the Hens.
Delaware next heads south to Miami for the FIU Thanksgiving Tournament. The Blue Hens will face Eastern Michigan at 2 p.m. on Friday.
College volleyball
Delaware State 3, Coppin State 1: The second-seeded Hornets reached the MEAC Tournament finals with the victory on Saturday.
Delaware State (26-3) was slated to face top-seeded Howard in the championship match on Sunday night. The Hornets were trying to capture the program’s first league title since 1986.
DSU was in the finals for the first time since 2010. The MEAC Tournament champion receives the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA championship tourney.
Against Coppin, DSU’s Valerio Otero led all players with 14 kills. Malgorzata Andersohn topped all players with 24 assists and contributed 14 digs.
College equestrian
Hornets win two events: Delaware State turned in strong performances in victories over California-Davis and South Dakota State this weekend.
The Hornets began the weekend with an 11-8 victory over Cal Davis, highlighted by a 7-3 edge in the Western rides and a sweep of the Most Outstanding Performer awards.
Delaware State closed out the weekend by defeating South Dakota State 12-5. The Hornets won the Jumping Seat and Western competitions, and swept MOPs for the second consecutive meet.
In the Western rides against Cal Davis, DSU posted a 4-1 victory in Horsemanship and was a 3-2 winner in Reining.
DSU’s Aniela Cortina was MOP in Horsemanship with a score of 74.5 aboard “Rocky.” Grace Wilson continues to collect awards this fall, earning the MOP in Reining, riding “Dunnit” to a score of 71.5 to lead all competitors.
Delaware State fell 5-4 in the Jumping Seat matches, although DSU’s Olivia Brown (83 aboard “Tillie”) was MOP in Fences and Victoria Croston earned the award on the Flat with an 81 on “Finnigan”
In the South Dakota State match, the Hornets took the Jumping Seat rides 7-3 and posted a 5-2 Western win. Brown collected her second MOP of the weekend with a strong Fences score of 87 on “Tillie” to top all competitors.
Fournier won a MOP of her own on the Flat with an 87 on “Finnegan.” On the Western side, Ashley Grasso was MOP in Horsemanship with a 76. DSU’s Amber Van Segbrook was MOP in Reining vs. South Dakota State.
