Delmar High is going to spend the next couple weeks trying to win a sixth straight DIAA field hockey state title.
But, in some ways, the championship the Wildcats won on Saturday means just as much.
In its one annual championship showdown with Cape Henlopen, Delmar overcame a one-goal deficit to edge the Vikings, 2-1, for the Henlopen Conference crown.
The victory was the second this season for the Wildcats (16-0) over Cape (14-2) and seventh straight in the rivalry since 2017. Delmar has won both Henlopen championship games that have been held.
Trailing 1-0 on Saturday, the Wildcats scored twice in a four-minute span of the second quarter to take the lead for good. A goal from Maci Bradford tied the contest before Laela Brown followed with the game winner.
Delmar finished with advantages of 12-8 in shots and 6-5 in corners in the game played at Sussex Academy. Kelly Davis made four saves for the Wildcats.
A first-quarter goal from Reagan Ciabattoni gave Cape the early advantage while Morgan Newcomb made three saves.
Both teams are the top seeds in their respective DIAA state tournaments. The Vikings host No. 8 Dover on Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Division I tourney, with the Wildcats playing their opener in the Division II tournament next Saturday morning.

The Riders, who downed IR, 2-1, during the regular season, led 3-1 at halftime and 4-1 when Gomez scored in the 49th minute. CR out-shot the Indians, 16-10, and held a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.
Goalie Kaden Childs made six saves.
IR (11-3-1) got goals from Jordan Illian to open the scoring in the sixth minute and Connor Bird to finish the scoring in the 52nd minute. Reece Stone made nine saves.
Top-seeded CR opens the DIAA Division state tournament on Wednesday by hosting Cape Henlopen while third-seeded IR opens the Division II tourney by hosting a game next Saturday.
